Questions about custom painting ski

This winter I am going to work on my ski, and I would like to get it panted. I live in cincinnati ohio, so there really aren't any custom boat painters or anything like that around. My question is, what kind of paint do you guys use? I know yamahas are just painted, and not gel coat? I just want to do the top half in a solid color... How much would something like that cost?

I painted my ski and had 300 in material, would I do it again? No way.......

Paint doesn't last to long on a ski so next time its spray bomb all the way.

mine is a fresh water ski.. what caused the paint to come off so fast?

Life vest buckles, shoes, on and off trailers/ramps, hyperextending a handlepole, dropping a hood when not on machine, leaving it beached or semi floating bumping into other boats, spilling gas/oil on it...

several things chip/scratch paint...

Like others have said, paint just does not stay looking good on a ski that gets used often. That's why I tape and re-spray every winter. Takes 2-4 hours and looks good for about 1 season. Cost just about nothing (under 50$) I have used Krylon and Armour Coat successfully.

Mine and my brothers skis have taken a beating. Hardcore! Mine needs to be completely redone already and I've only been riding it for about 3 months. The random cement block under the water  The tubby breaking. The runaway ski into the side. Dropping wrench on paint. After a while you just realize it is JUST A JET SKI. But I still get compliments every time I go out which makes you feel really good. Depending on if you are gonna ride like a bitch or if you are going to beat it up. If you dont break anything you arent riding hard enough. :cool2: Would I do it again? Probably. I like my stuff looking nice. If I take it somewhere I am doing ALOT more prep work myself!

hmm... well so far the yami paint has help up pretty good....

OEM paint whether marine or automotive is always the best.

I painted my ski and after painting once I know what to do better next time. When a get another ski I'm definately going to paint it. This time base/clear automotive paint. Its a lot more work but I beleive it to be superior.

I also like to paint. Very satisfying although you always look at the job and wonder if it would have looked better in a different colour. Always happens to me, I have way too many good ideas/designs than I do skis.

Like the green metalflake ski I painted. Wish I could do that again. Looking back I should have left it black/yellow and just changed the shade of yellow, thats all it needed.

I would have it painted, buy someone professionaly. I just didn't know if it was automotive paint people used, or a marine paint. I would imagine if it was cleared over the top it would be some what strong??

Prep well and it painted with automotive paint, and clear automotive coat over top. They resist UV rays well and are a hard finish.

Marine paint nevere has the colour selection and none of them use a base/clear application.

If you are going to try and pint it yourself use something durable like an Interlux Perfection. Something that dries hard. I used an Epifanes paint and it never dried as hard as I wanted it to.

Do not paint hull. Leave it white, it ends up white anyways after a few rides on a trailer or being beached.

I have been painting sport bikes for several years now and have found from experience that 2 step base\clear is the most durable. The most important part of doing a lasting job is the prep work on the surfaces.Do all your final sanding with 400 grit and always do wet sanding and don't push hard, then prime the whole thing, let it dry until the next day,wet sand it with 600,spray the base(color),then if it is clean(no trash, fish eye, ect.)go ahead and clear it.if not then let it dry for a day,wet sand it with 1200,re-do base if you have to until you get it right then clear it.Some important things to know:always wet sand and take your time,be careful on the edges(you'll find out):wash entire spray area with soapy water, completely dry, then wipe everything with mineral spirits before spraying:base color can be cheap stuff, but don't scimp on the clear.A top quality clear will shine like it's got water on it and will last for years. It's also strong enough that you can't dig it with a fingernail and will protect the color from fading as soon:always mix your products as recommended by the manufacturer, different brands=different mixing:make sure your air supply is super clean and dry, this will certainly ruine any work.

OR you can sand it,clean it,tape it,and spray it all in the same day for about $50 and when you get good at Rattle Can or Spray Bomb (depends on where you're from i guess) it can actually look pretty good and last descently. My brother's X-2 is spray bombed with rustoleum metallic blue and is about 3-4 years old and it's STILL on there.Just depends on if you want a looker or a rider.
