I have been painting sport bikes for several years now and have found from experience that 2 step base\clear is the most durable. The most important part of doing a lasting job is the prep work on the surfaces.Do all your final sanding with 400 grit and always do wet sanding and don't push hard, then prime the whole thing, let it dry until the next day,wet sand it with 600,spray the base(color),then if it is clean(no trash, fish eye, ect.)go ahead and clear it.if not then let it dry for a day,wet sand it with 1200,re-do base if you have to until you get it right then clear it.Some important things to know:always wet sand and take your time,be careful on the edges(you'll find out):wash entire spray area with soapy water, completely dry, then wipe everything with mineral spirits before spraying:base color can be cheap stuff, but don't scimp on the clear.A top quality clear will shine like it's got water on it and will last for years. It's also strong enough that you can't dig it with a fingernail and will protect the color from fading as soon:always mix your products as recommended by the manufacturer, different brands=different mixing:make sure your air supply is super clean and dry, this will certainly ruine any work.
OR you can sand it,clean it,tape it,and spray it all in the same day for about $50 and when you get good at Rattle Can or Spray Bomb (depends on where you're from i guess) it can actually look pretty good and last descently. My brother's X-2 is spray bombed with rustoleum metallic blue and is about 3-4 years old and it's STILL on there.Just depends on if you want a looker or a rider.
