just wondering if anyone has an idea as to what the little scallops are for, at the outer/leading edge on the vanes on this pump? seems like it would promote cavitation, if anything.

I'm just guessing but I would think the outer edges is where the most cavitation occurs because the flow is hitting the walls and bouncing back. It looks like those joggles would ease the flow and allow the water near the wall to go down and out instead of back towards the middle.

I can't imagine why some one would grind away those areas. In my old school 440 or FX-1 pumps, the cavitation erosion would do that by itself.

Maybe that's the simplest answer then. Someone took a pump that had this erosion and just cleaned up the edges instead of welding the area back.

What is that pump from?

now that I look at it from your perspective jfw, it does make sense about the anti-cavitation configuration theory. regarding the cleaned up vanes comment flash, they look too uniform to have been done that way. the pump looks to me like it's from an ultra 150, but I don't know for sure, I just found that picture surfin' through google images.
