Super Jet Project Vajeen

i started this build a couple weeks ago and posted it on pwc...figured i'd post it here too. got a squarenose this past summer and 3 weeks into having it there was an..."incident"..that resulted in a huge hole in the side of my hull. so i picked up an empty hull out of nj and decided that instead of just switching hulls that i might as well.....SNOWBALL it into an entire re-build. basically the plan is to reshape and rocker the nose, rebuild the tray around the pump, reshape the sides of the tray, lower the hood, cut a bit from the back of the hull, and a bunch of little things along the way. i started by cutting the tray out and de-foaming it, then i cut the top of the nose off, and finally started making the cuts to rocker it yesterday.. if everything goes right this should be a completely different ski when i'm done with it. :fingersx:

I like the circular saw technique for cuttin up the hull!
just curious if the nose is going to rocker at all with the top deck still attached and the cut lines only going to the rail?
any plans for shortening the front as well?

i'm definitely shortening the front..and you're right i wouldn't get very far without cutting the top deck lol. yesterday i had to stop before i got a chance to cut it. there's more taken out now but i forgot to take a picture before i left so this is from earlier in the day. i left the bond lines alone and just cut the outside of the rails in a few more cuts then the bottom of the hull.

cut up some bits of a vxr hull lying around to wedge into the cuts too..the cuts open up pretty easily now so i started grinding some more out of the top to see how far up i could get it. i'll post a pic tom. i also started grinding the inside of the hull to get ready to lay the fiberglass down. once i get that done i'll get to finally hack that nose off ! :arms:

i haven't had much time to work on this so the last month has been me trying to sand the inside of the hull a hour here or there. today i finally started laying up the glass for the rocker and reinforcing the hull.

I wedged in chunks of fiberglass i cut out of a VXR hull to widen the rocker a bit more..look at that rocker !

got it all taped up and ready for glass..
IMG_0406.jpg
reinforced the bottom of the hull and started filling in the center section of the rocker. with any luck i can lay out at least one side tom..but we'll see. i know how that goes....

Looks good. I would grind off the inserts for smooth, strong, flat surface to bond to and put them back after. Butt that's just me.

Waaa whooo. Looks like a fun project you have going there. I'd have to agree with mcdog bout the inserts would be easier
With your mad turf skills I am anxious to see how his boat turns out

I will but I have to put the ski on its side to do it or it will just seep right out. plus I want to fill the bond line in before I reinforce the side so that I can just glass right over the entire thing to give it more strength.

why would removing the inserts (assuming your talking about the tank and waterbox mounts) make things stronger? granted it would make it easier to lay up one solid flat surface in the inside, but if i was putting mounts into hull they would be installed prior to any large reinforcement was done, so why bother butting off mounts that are already solidly part of the hull and appear to be in the correct place? im just not following the pros of doing that or im confusing that staement-lol

It would enable you to use one solid continuous sheet of fiberglass. Doing the sides at the same time follows this same philosophy. One piece of fiberglass all laid up at the same time is stronger than pieces laid up separately or laid up in a discontinuous way to go around the inserts. Gravity will not keep the fiberglass from sticking to the sides if one solid sheet is used to lay up the whole thing at once. Plus you can use superglue to get fiberglass to stay somewhere before you lay in resin if it is a problem.

i agree with the glass layer being stronger if it is all layed up in one shot versus doing the bottom, then eash side individually, but when re prepped correctly theres really no real strength difference between laying up all in one shot or three times, especially in the case of reiforcement or just filling the rocker cuts. if we were building this hull from scratch off a mold or something then yeah i would make sure everything is laid up in one shot versus three.

but i still think its way more work then necessary to remove the tank and water box mounts when they are already strongly fixed to the bottom of the hull, just to save from making holes in the mat or something, i don't necessarily subscribe to the thought that one solid peice of mat is stronger then two or three if all done in the same wet layup layer.

all i do know is i put a huge hole in the side of her old sj with my reinforced fx-1 during "the incident" and my ski is layed up the same way as this and the fx-1 was plenty strong to hold up just fine with only a scratch -lol

so far just two on the bottom..i want to wait till i cut the hood to do the sides so i don't go crazy glassing 7 inches of hull i'm not even gonna use. sadly, i probably won't be able to even touch it till after daytona.

Thats about what I did on the seams for my rocker. I did to layers on the inside and to on the outside. I'm working on my nose and pole bracket are right now. For the I am using 12oz biaxial in the nose since it it harder to get to on the inside and the 12oz is easier to get to stay down. I just hope I used enough (4 layers of 12oz) . Keep up the good work it will come along eventually. Mine has been in progress since october. Hoping to be done by the end of march.

i feel like 4 layers is enough. i'll prob end up doing something similar to you since i have to glass the bottom anyway. i'm not even thinking about what the pole bracket area will look like yet lol i know i have to figure out something but it all depends on if i end up cutting the hood so the pole is flush with it or just saying f-it and go as low as possible. i really like the flush look though....we'll see.
