Problem with SXR I am buying

Hi guys, wondered if you could help me out. I was going to see and hopefully buy an 09 SXR tomorrow, however the owner let me know today that he went to start it as it had been sitting for a while. When he did he could not start it due to oil in the carbs? He said he will now have to rebuild the carbs and it should be good by next weekend. H said it was common due to not being used often. Would there be any truth to that story??

Oil in the carbs...not likely. Perhaps gunk/residue from long standing fuel. Anyhow, any time you're buying a ski and the seller says "just needs the carbs rebuilt" it's a good reason to be skeptical about the entire ski. If his statement is correct you should be able to add a little premixed gas directly down the carb and the ski should run briefly but this only tells you so much. Make sure you check compression prior to the ski running. Double check everything from the pump to the pole.

Caveat emptor!

If hes going to fix it, just wait until it is done and do a regular inspection before you buy it.

If he is not going to fix it...

Its always the carbs. No one ever says, oh yeah, i did a thorough diagnotic but didnt bother to fix it. Its always just the carbs. Its $150 in parts alone to rebuild carbs and im not going to assume thats the only problem. If it has compression and spark, it needs at least $200 off the price if it runs with fuel poured in. If it wont run at all or the owner wont let you take a look, walk. There are others.

Not buying it...

I would shoot a little starting fluid into the intake, and see if it fires up. It should fire right up and idle for about 5 seconds.

Check for good spark.
Check for compression (Anywhere from 150 to 180, make sure both cylinders are really close to each other within 6 pounds).

I would also take 200 off for a carb rebuild. Also check GAS CAP. They are known to fail and let in water...this could be the cause of any issues also.
