Pre-Daytona makeover: Need some advice on paint/front exhaust

Ok, here's the deal..

I decided not too long ago that I was sick and tired of riding the heaviest superjet known to man. Noone wanted to help me load it up, it sucked.

So, before the Daytona ride I am going to refoam, repaint/turf, and just give a general once over. The inside is good, no reinforcement needed or bodywork....Just foam and paint:smile: . My time is limited, so I need some advice.

I will pretty much be doing all the work myself, but I think we do have someone that will spray for me.. The boat at this point the tray is toally cut out, and 99.5 defoamed (the only thing left are just underneath the rails, and a little in the corners) :woot: :woot:

Paint:

What are my options? Single stage vs. Base/clear Advantages to either in a DIY situation? Anyone ever try and get MAACO or similar to spray for them?

Motosurfer painted his boat in my backyard last year, and that could be done again..but again, Im on a limited time schedule with only nights and like 1 day a week (still riding sundays on my fugly square :sneaky:

Whats the difference in prepwork with SS vs. B/C? Different progression of sandpaper?

What are the most useful tools for paint prepwork (I have a 60 gallon compressor so air's not a problem..)? I want to be time efficient, but at the same time I want good quality..

Ok, thats all for that...

Front Exhaust:

Right now Im running front only with TDR...Its LOUD..but I ride 99.9% in ocean inlets so it doesnt really matter..

Im either going to make it a dual setup, or..ditch the whole setup and go back to stock. Whatcha think? Are there really any true benefits to s front outlet on a freeride ski?

I do like the control it gives you in a tailstand, but it dirties the hell out of the paint and must be cleaned with mineral spirits after every ride to stay looking nice...:skull2: :banghead: :skull2: Do you guys with DUAL exhausts notice lots of residue on the side of your hood/pole??

I have the hardware for both, just trying to figure which is the optimum setup.

Thanks in advance

Unless for flatwater freestyle, I never could understand why someone would want to go back to the 440 era of front exhaust. I don't like the smell or sound. On my rear exhaust SN, I was able to tail-stand for at least 30 seconds until it started to load-up.

Several months ago, 3 of us (1 with front/rear exhaust) were riding in the surf and suddenly the one with front/rear exhaust began to sink. Within 10 seconds only 2 inches of rear was above water. Long story short, the front exhaust hose poped off (essentially a 2" hole in the hull).

I ride 2-3 tanks each surf outing and front exhaust would get old real quick. For surf riding stick to the essentials.

I used single stage on mine. 1 less coat will shorten the process, if it goes on bad or down the line when it gets scratched it's easy to color sand & buff.

i agree unless you spend allllllllll day doing tail stand tricks i dont care for it. i was going to run it in my square and after ridning next to xmetal water box on b piped stock engine ski. was too loud .

this is what i used on my last 2 paint jobs scott..

front exhaust is for flatwater. its just another point of failure for a surf boat. i remember hearing even paul (jr's) boat sank once from the hose coming off the outlet.

Thanks for the info Edwin. I think I am gona do some work to my new XMW WB and route my front only exhaust throught the UPPER hull.

Front only exhaust is saving me 6lbs over a dual setup....but im a squid, so dont listen to me.:haha:

I hope you really don't plan on doing that...

another thing..
you did add weight to the nose by putting the stuff up there though...
I would rather have that weight in the back where it's at.

I second the single stage, quicker easier and cheaper too, but base clear looks better IMO. there are no shortcuts on the prep, and there is a lot of hand work to be done.

go single stage... you won't want to pay for BCCC

just make sure you seal it good before paint

I beg to differ, I will get you some accurate weight Tonight.

you are adding parts to the front of the ski right???
so yes, overall you are lighter, but you added weight to the area
you want to be the lightest.. Probably won't make a diference...

I mean 6lbs is less than one gallon of fuel... I don't notice that when riding at all...

as far as exhaust comming out the top deck... talk to Joe Kenney about that... email him...

The XMW WB is suppose to be 2lbs..... stocker weighs 6lbs. the front hose/exhaust setup is pretty damn light as well. I want to alter the setup a little bit....

I second single stage much easier to do small area repairs down the road I like chroma 1 single stage epoxy paints. Hand prep with block and water. Use a check coat on final wet sand.

Funny, my dual carb ski will do tailspins until I get bored, w/no bogging or lack of response...Just dry out the waterbox.

I agree on another potential failure point.:skull2:

i think I will just ditch (and sell :) the whole front exhaust system and go back to basic)...I do like the way you can just idle in a tail stall with it, but I will get over that....

single stage it is......I going to start with the DA by tomorrow night and hopefully spray rigtht around xmas time....

I want to keep this rebuild simple, but biggest thing is that I want to stay on schedule.....I will NOT be riding a squarenose in januray
