how are the polaris octane skis?

good quality?

i know they are very fast in stock form

how is the handling?

better freerider or racer?

thanks for the info

I've won races on the plorais octane. And i Suck. good fast stock ski. just do some research and be sure to check the Problem areas often. Like the motor mounts delaminating, carbs coming loose often, also the stock carbs only have a low speed adjuster that kinda self adjust from vibrations. so use a bit of silicon on the mixture screw once you have it set up so it doesn't fall out.

Quality... well, the UMI parts on it are high quality. The rest is so-so. Expect to do a lot of work to fix little issues like: Hood catch (depending on year), intake manifold breaking, motor mount plates pulling out, elec. box pops open & seal is poor, gas tank brackets rub hole in tank, hull takes on water (not sealed in the back = wet foam)... etc.

Very fast top speed, but very soft bottom-end... no snap due to very low compression & a very, very heavy flywheel & crank. But good news, the cdi is digital and fully re-programmable by Watcon.com

Handling is a handfull on the race course, Blowsion Tubbies are manditory. But it can be learned, just not SXR style handling. For freeride it handles good. some quick-steer mods help here too.

i know this all sounds fairly negative, but actually I say get one! They are very unique and they rip. That engine has a TON of potential... just ask Malone or CG Racing or Watcon.

One of the Georgia guys (Cory, I don't think he posts much) has one & rides it in surf. He brought it to Daytona & let one of the better riders ride it; the guy was snapping rolls (& maybe BF, I dunno) like crazy.

WAB here knows Cory & probably has his number.

I've ridden Cory's ski; with whatever mods he has it's ~okay~ off the bottom, great mid & top, but I dislike the flat cornering.

I believe Mike Serlin was ridding the Polaris in Daytona. Mike loves those things, though he doesn't have one. Everytime someone shows up with one he has to ride it. I'm sure he will post on this thread.
I think like any surf ski, it has to be reinforced.

so it has great potential

but needs some mods

like reinforcing engine compartment sides WHERE else?

a little silicone on engine idle screws?

what is a hood catch?

what else is mandatory to get it running pretty good
not like a pro ski but just very rideable

thanks for all the input guys so i dont make a mistake buying one

You will need to fix everything I said above...
I dont know about reinforcement, as I have not done mine yet. just take a look at all the Superjet reinforcing threads and it should be about the same.
Hood catch is where the hooks on the front of the hood latch in to on the handlepole bracket... the early style ones like to pop off while riding = bye-bye hood!

any body want to post some pics of theirs

thanks again

here you go:

Can this be prevented by installing hoodstraps?
