...between "Freeride" and "Freestyle".

I know what they are as it pertains to bikes. But I'm not so sure on skis.

in addition; I have an OLD JS550, I want to know what I can do with it. From what I understand it's a solid beginner platform with some serious limitations. I want to "get stupid" on a stand up, back flips... the whole enchilada. I've proibably ridden this thing a dozen times (no prior experience on a stand up) I'm getting close to nose stabs and subs. jumps are easy. And this is on a flat lake. So I think I have potential. will this ski give me a good foundation to learn from.... or am Iwasting my time and need to upgrade.

This has been discussed before...

IMO:

Freeride is when you ride in the surf pulling off tricks, enjoy challenging and riding with friends, ride without rules (except for the unspoken rules). Thinking that riding in the open ocean is unlike any other type of riding. This is more of a lifestyle. :439:

Freestyle is when you take a 5 gallon jug to the lake/pond/canal/flat and ride within sight of that 5 gallon jug. :poke:

on the 550 issue, ride it till the spark plugs fall off.. dont spend any money on it.. save up for a superjet (any 701cc superjet will do).. when you're $300 short of your superjet cash.. sell the 550.. never look back...

spoken just like ....well, ME!

Thats just what I was thinkin.:Banane01:

id get some footholds. theyre inexpensive and not hard to install once you have all materials and tools laid out. gotta returf the ski though, thats where it may not be worth it if it doesnt already need turf. footstraps can easily break an ankle if something goes awry.

with footholds, and straps id imagine, you get used to the solitary placement of your feet. you can still move them around, but when you want grip, you know where to go. you learn to ride with them.

i rode with the straps set up like a surf/skateboard stance.. one strap forward, one strap back, both angled just slightly, not facing directly forward.
sounds like my standard stance. but, as I mentioned. I tend to move my feet around. so much so as to switch from STD. to a goofy footed stance. depending on the situation. I also have my feet fully to the front and rear of the tray. So I'me afraid the straps would be a hinderance.

But then again... I have no idea what I'm doing, so maybe I've got it all wrong.

Freeride competition:
is performing tricks off waves in the surf along w/ surfriding tricks like re-entry's for points. (8 min sessions)

Freestyle competition:
is performing tricks off flat water or your own wake for points (2 min. sessions)

Freeride:
doing whatever you want on a ski anywhere as long as there is no competition or points scored.. not practice or training, just riding hard

Freestyle:
practicing and developing a two minute routine for flatwater.. training ect.

that's what it is to me...

what I dont get about the staps is where do you put 'em?

I move my feet all over the tray depending on what I'm trying to do.
why not put in a set of lifters? super cheap/easy and they won't get in the way. sounds perfect for your sitch.

true, but don't push lifters on him.. get him going in the right direction. better to practice tearing up a 550 tray for the first time, no? :cool2:

unless he's a freak of nature like the king of the daytona nosestabs.

If he's smart, his next ski will already be built.

Just like a couple of briliant guys on this board :cool2:
