Pismo Wind, was that normal?

Nope....the wind doesn't usually come up until about 2 in the afternoon, and even then, it's normally just a breeze....the later you ride into the winter, the nicer the weather and surf gets in Pismo. I know that sounds odd, but the inversion there with the weather compared to inland or even north and south of Pismo are what makes it such a unique place to ride.

Can I crash your little spring break shin dig? I think I'll have my ski with the new purty Daylite Ramsey paint job on it back by then....?

Pismo Wind?

How normal is it? I mean, there were tons of RVs who brought tarps and plywood to use as windbreaks.

I don't think people would bring plywood for a breeze. That was my first time to Pismo, and I am not doubting the resident/veteran riders, but for people to go to that extent means it was anticipated.

It's the first time I've been "camping" and ever seen plywood (and T-posts for tents) used.

(I moved the above posts because I wanted to keep the original thread on topic)

Most people that camp at Pismo, do it all year round. Tarps and other windbreak materials are a part of setting up camp. If you don't set up all your supply, then you have no where to put them. To answer your questions yes; Pismo wind can be very nasty, especially from June until early October. But like any where else, there will be calm and nice days in between and there are days when it blowing 20MPH. From Late October on to the next summer, weather should be very pleasant, again, there will be day(s) where the wind will be blowing...If you're worry about the wind blowing in March, the chances of that happening is very low...(10%). What I can say is if it does gets windy, it will be from late morning until 6 pm and you usally have calm nights. Hope I answer some of your concerns....

Thanks Lisa and Coung, But seriously that was about the worst surf conditions I’ve ever seen. That was the first time I’ve ever been to Pismo and it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. A lot of people talk Pismo up on this site and I had some big expectations. Granted I’m a little spoiled being from Oceanside and I know you can’t judge a spot by going there one time (Oceanside blows out too) so that’s why I’m asking. I’d love to head up again for Coungs ride this spring, I just don’t want to make the drive if its going to be that windy.

I agree w/you, I was pretty bad when the wind picked up. But it was nice in the morning. And that when we usually get our rides in. March will be nice, can't promise you but I'm optimistic about it.. See you then. Or just go on surfline.com and check it now and then...So that you can get a better perspective...

pismo blows almost everyday...thats why there are dunes...in general its also a pretty crappy wave, thats why no one surfs it..it does get fun though and its easy to launch so its a toss up...you can usually sneak a session in before it blows

I didn't remember any wind last year except maybe on Sunday. Also last year almost every day was foggy, but this year there was none.

I asked out loud one this same thing and Neil said, "How do you think the dunes got here?" and I was like well if it blows like this all the time, how is the beach not constantly eroding? Sure enough, the wind changed direction, back towards the ocean, on Sunday.

thats very rare except for a few hrs in the morning..

either way its fun..shred till the wind blows, eat some food and wait for the evening glass off..just for clarification it was extra windy the other weekend..it will usually blow enough to make the surf ******** in the afternoon but least you can go outside without getting sandblasted..some days its glassy all day too..it just depends..but generally pismo is a windy place

pismo is ALWAYS windy generally after 12, usually stays up till dusk. its rare to stay calm all day and very rare to see offshore winds.
you MUST ride in the am due to waves and wind.
