alright guys im currently re-assembling a motor and am debating weather to paint the cylinders or not, i've read a lot about people paining them but no long term results. right now they are bead blasted-raw aluminum.
i would imagine powdercoating would be the best compromise however i dont want to spend that much.

i just have the feeling that high temp spray paint will look like crap in no-time

my ski will be used in salt water, however i do wash it out really well and spray with wd-40 after each ride.

so what do you guys think, paint or don't paint?

honestly powder coat on the cylinders would not be that much !!! go to a powdercoating company near you i dont know were you live but i got some stuff powdercoated on my cobra kit that i thought would be expensive but how powder coating works it by booth size if you tell them to wait until they get in a big shipment for black then it will be cheaper than individually having it done...

even high temp is unnecessary, IMO. the engine doesnt get hot enough to warrant it like a 4 stroke does. it doesnt hurt though. regular shytti paint with clear works fine for years.

also keep in mind that a lot of the powdercoating companys make their money on prep work so if you put tape over the top and take a file and file off the excess tape and then thats if really for prep work just wipe it down with acetone too and tell them that its already preped

I race VWs, and we use HI-temp BBQ paint on the cylinders. It has been proven that painted cylinders will disipate heat faster than non painted. We can cool the motor off much faster that way. Its dirt cheap, and lasts very well.

Powder coat for that would be in the $20.00 range at our coater. Ask him when he is running what color. Thats the easy cheap way.

Good points on the prep. Do it yourself, but check with him on what tape to use.

No paint. If you WD or silicone spray the bare aluminum, it should keep better than a painted surface with corrosion creeping up from underneath. Powdercoat if it is never going to get wet. How many painted/powdercoated Lamey cylinders do you ever see? :eek:mfg:

If you want it to match OEM yamaha bluish color, use Evinrude Outboard motor paint. Prime bare alum first with zinc chromate self etching primer.
Here is a Riva 'red' pipe I just painted with the Evinride motor paint.
