Painting blaster a couple of ??

Whatz up guys, I'm currently working on my blaster, since I've finished up my SJ.. I'm going with the same color scheme.. I have a couple of questions reguarding the grab handles, gas cap, and fire ex compartment.. Could these items be painted without any problems, because they are like plastic I guess??

You guessed right. They are plastic. Change this thread's topic title to something about painting plastic and I think you will get better responses and we may even be able to include it in the Painting How-to in the Tech FAQ section.

My advice would be that, no, they cannot be painted. A professional painter may offer an explaination or disagree and say why.

If you want to do leg work, search PWCT for painting bumpers (usually in regards to 750SX's). You will find suggestions of using Automotive bumper paint, but that will scratch off easily.

My grab handles and fire ex cover are painted on my blaster.... here is what I found:

Since I don't use the fire extinguisher compartment, it has lasted fine for about 4 years now. However, the grab handles, because they get used more frequently, are another story. The paint is chipping off of them. Gas cap - mine is billett... So, my personal experience, paint will not hold up on plastic for high wear areas. Though, you might talk to a pro painter to see if there is a paint that can be used on plastic that will wear better. Hope that helps.

Painting anything plastic is tough because of plastic's tendency to bend and fatigue. The one option that could prolong the paint from peeling or even making it stick indefinitely is to add a flex agent at the time of painting. This will cause the paint to become pliable enough to avoid cracking if an impact were to occur on the plastic. The key to good paint job on plastic is prep. The piece needs to be sanded and smoothed out with fine grit paper. Before painting, all oils need to be wiped away with thinner. Prime then paint my friend. You should be good to go for a while.

Cenz...what you can do with the grab handles/fire ext. cap is get some RIT plastic dye from wally world...follow the instuctions and it'll work great!

butti had his puple handles dyed black and they lasted a good 2 seasons before the purple started to show thru again....




ive thought a couple of times about billet grab handles...now that would be blingin'

PPG has what they call the OneChoice Plastic Prep System.
It consists of a "Clean and Scuff Sponge" that is saturated in what seems to be a citrus cleaner.
Then it has an "Adhesion Wipe" which smells a lot like an alcohol wipe.
Then there's an aerosol spray with the "Advanced Plastic Bond"

I bought the whole setup to paint some Banshee plastics. It seems to have worked pretty good.
I added a flex agent to my clear for the plastics because they bend a lot.
Since I had it laying around I have used it on Yamaha gas caps and Blaster handles and so far have not had any problems. Of course time will tell.

*shrug* I used them to get on the ski. Pretty sure that's what they are there for. :wink:
