Not starting - 01 SJ

Hey guys - havent been here in a while, have had lots going on. Hate to come back to the site in this manner but I'm having trouble with my son's (Experimental's) machine. 01 SJ with MSD Enhancer.

We haven't started the boats in a while (about a month) so today I decided to take them out to the local lake on the trailer (no riding allowed) and run the stabil in the gas to get it into the system and ready for winterizing. Mine started fine but the 2001 SJ wouldn't start. It coughed once but no go. Just on a whim I unscrewed open the ebox cover where the fuse is, and (holy sh#t!) water came out. Not a whole lot but enough I knew I had a problem. Anyway I found that the fuse had blown so I headed home without soing any more trying. At home I opened up the ebox and dried it out, looked like it had had about an inch in the box that sat in there for a whlie. I also found the fuse had blown so I stole the extra one that was in my 02. It did cough once but just for a split second, and I still can't get it to start. I put it away for the night now to let it dry some more, I figured it may still be wet somewhere in the box.

What's likely the problem hee? I hope the MSD isn't blown. I have my old OEM so I may swap that back in to see if that's the case.

Thanks for any ideas. I am glad its the off-season at least.

Jake (Experimental) if you're reading this I'm doing my best to figure it out.

Water in Ebox over time with MSD enhancer = ruined enhancer. The rev limit adjuster is not waterproof. Put a stock CDI in there and I bet it will start. Buy a new Ebox gasket while you are at it and make sure the fuse holder cap has the gasket present also.

Is it cranking over? if not hydrolock or electrical... Relay

Did you pull the plugs make sure theres no water in motor?

It turns over fine - no water in motor - was put away running fine, we just didn't realize that there was water in the ebox.

It did kick once while I was turning it over (after the dry-out and new fuse). I am wondering if its just pissed at me for not running it for a while ha ha.

If it doesn't start tomorrow I'm gonna put the oem CDI back in and see what happens. If it is the Enhancer I'm glad it wasn't my new one in my boat, this one had it in there when we got it. I'll be looking for a deal out there.

Sounds like a little dab of silicone around the rev limit adjuster screw would be a good idea next time too.

I killed one the same way years ago.

msd enhancer = NOT water proof.

I drilled holes in my ebox so the water would drain out, havent killed one since.

NOTE- I dont ride in saltwater.

As a dummy check, disconnect the stop button connector in the right rear of the engine compartment. They can corrode inside and prevent the ignition from firing, though it will still crank.

the black/white (I think, its dark in there) one? Did that - no go.

Is there ANY reason the machine might fire for a split second in this state if the MSD is fried? It did that once while I was trying it again tonight after work. But only once. It did that yesterday too - just one little split second fire.

I guess I'll swap the oem cdi in and that will give me the answer :)

Just what I need - replace a dang enhancer. Those things are finicky. Oh well, at least its the first I've ever had go.

the msd that I had and went bad, would attempt to spark as you let off of the starter button, so it sounds as if its trying to fire.

and after reading some other enhancer death stories... thats a common attribute for one thats dead.

I don't know if I got the idea on here but I've resurrected my enhancer before by throwing it in the oven for a little while. You guys can rip on me but I'm a broke college kid and hate stock cdis. Now I've learned to use my cordless impact gun to tighten down the ebox and it keeps it bone dry.

If you want to try this just let me know and I'll post up some more details.

I put the cdi in the oven then turned on the oven to just warm and let it in there for a few minutes. I put it on a sheet with some tin foil.

What's the worst that can happen? It doesn't work so you're right were you started, but if it does then sweet.

Just an FYI, my ebox was filled with fresh water so don't know what you guys are dealing with.

Fresh water.

What kind of marinade did you use on your msd?? ha ha

Hey I might just try it -after I do the oem swap back in. What can it hurt? The idea is to get the water off the curcuits, if it isn't blown already it may just work.
