Custom/Hybrid Noob questions on a future build

Hey guys, to start off my name is Michael.

I joined the site awhile ago and planed on getting into stand ups, I ended up getting a 08 sxr awhile ago and rode it a bit ( not as much as I wanted to) I am hoping to change that this summer a lot. Long story short I wanted to get into freestyle and can't really do that with a sxr with out putting a crap load into it so I started looking into am hulls for a future build and to do some more research before i got one but.... A friend of mine bought a new 2013 fr-2 Evo and now he is unable to complete his build dude to issues so to help him out of a jam I bought his hall from him.

Now I'm at a point that I would like to build a ski seeing that I happened to luck out. My only prob is I don't really know much about this stuff and haven't had the time to read through a lot of the stuff on the site seeing that I got a new house and doing renos in it. So what I'm trying to see is what would you guys recommend I should look into?

What my plan is so far is to have this built not for this summer but next unless things change and I can do it this summer.

I ride on a lake that is mostly flat and some days gets some waves up to 3'-4' so ill be trying to build this ski more for flat water freestyle and some surf.

An FR-2 is not the right boat for flatwater freestyle. It would be better than a stock hull, but I wouldn't pick it as the starting point for a dedicated flatwater boat.

Well since it sounds like you arent riding once a week or competing at world finals I think you will be more than happy with what you have and will be using it for. Unless all you want to do is flip all the time and just blip the throttle around in circles then I believe you made a good choice on what you have. It will be a great ski to recreational ride at a lake, you probably wont be able to flip it off of your own set-up wake, it is more than capable of flipping behind a boat wake. I know cause I own an evo and have seen what it can and can't do, the list for can do's is way longer than the can'ts...

Or you could just do what it seems like a lot of others are doing and buy a motor and hull out of your skill range...but I wouldn't suggest it

Ya I was told the fr2 would not be the best flat freestyle ski I could get but for my riding experience that... That being like zero haha I hope this works out.


Ya Lake Ontario is great when it's like that not sure about the wind just kinda lucked out when I went, I do get some nice 3' waves on lake simco when there's a storm ;D

Do you guys happen to have any suggestion for ie, power plant, exhaust setup, pump? Any of this stuff cuz I really have no clue

Figure out your budget and go from there.

For what's considered a flatwater boat (and not a rec-riding boat that Joe mentioned), you'd need a 1000cc class motor, total loss, big carbs, and big magnum pump. You're looking at a ballpark figure of 10k.
For a rec-riding boat, a big bore 760 would be great, coupled with a Solas mag.
Figure out what it is you really want to do and how much to spend on it.

Well I differently want to try and ski every weekend and get out a lot. If i am to build the ski for next summer 2014, Then i can go with a 10k budget i would rather spend the extra time and money getting the right parts from the start rather then getting stuff now and then replacing it later on.

Later on this summer i might be able to try out a friends of mine to see how i like his, he has a surf build ski. But until then i don't really have anything to compare it to.

Better question to help us spend your money lol...

Are you wanting to go out and do backflips and barrel roles whenever you want to or are you looking for a ski that will serve as a recreational ski that you and friends can ride. I guess what myself and others are trying to say is you really need to male a decision between purely flatwater(which in this community means pretty much back flips and barrell rolls), recreational riding(chasing boat wakes, and doing long lake rides with open throttle) or a surf ski. You can always build a ski for multiple purposes but that will make you compromise one way or another.

To me it sounds like matt has already given a good start for sure. A 760 based motor, carbs, ignition and pump. Or you could even go into a big bore motor as well from the start.

Example: i dont have a flatwater boat but am looking for one but it would propbably have 1000+ cc's minimum for my taste.

My ski i just finished was built strictly for surf and rec riding since i live on the watet. I went with a rickter evo, big bore 850 motor, b pipe, ignition and pump. This ski is a great all around ski but would not be good at all for purely flatwater, if i was going to build the rickter into a flatwater ski i would sell the evo and get somethong a touch smaller like the xfs, foot rocket, circus, backie chan or hurricane because they flat out get on it with a big cc motor and can go big. So not even seeing your budget but having the same hull as you you can go different directions with it as i have heard of other evo owners using them for flatwater but they are needing bigger cc motors$$ to do it. Since you gave the evo i woild build a recreational ski that has some power for when uou want to start and try aerials off boat wakes.

And most importantly you can spend 20, even 30 thousand on a competitive flatwater boat but as long as your having fun and smiling while riding that is the most important thing in the long run.
Let us know your plans and dont be afraid to ask questions, its the people in this world who dont ask questions you should be worried about and it seems like sometimes on here if you ask any question you will get ridiculed for asking but thats just because people have to much time on their hands or dont have a real job and feel like they can say whatever they want from a computer but there is a lot of knowledgeanle people on here wanting to help.

Thanks for the replies guys, I would deff like to do backflips and barrel rolls anytime but from what iv seen and read not going to happen with this ski, so what I am thinking of doing right now would be make a more of a recreational ski to go out with buddy's and have some fun and maybe some surf in mind as well.

I would like to be able to try and do a backflip off a wake like you had mentioned camojoe, and then later on when I get more riding experience or ever do get to try out a xfs then maybe get into one of those but for now I guess ill be going for a recreational build with some surf in mind if possible.

So if you guys happen to have any suggestions for that stuff I'm all ears.

Hey Alex, ya iv been reading more over there and lots of good stuff, I also hope when I get my sxr up and running this year to hook up with some rides that might get started up and then maybe next year have the fr2 ready ;D
