it has straps.. the ski sits on the crest of the wave further away from the breaking section (your left of the photo).. if he paddled into this his board would be twice as long.

Using a ruler on my desk, the surfer is about 1/2" tall and the wave is 4" tall so 6' x 8 = 48' so I'm going to round up and call that about 50'. Thats a big azz wave.
