newbie question about subbing

haha I need to hit the gym. I gotta get teh 2 hop thing down. I seem to hop once then the pump doesn't hook up for the next bigger hop. I mainly been trying off one hop.

After you get the hops down you can pop the ski out of the water as many times as you want then go into a sub. 1, 2, 15 it doesn't matter as long as the ski is flat in the air before you decide to go under.

Since you're a fly weight, you gotta get your weight more forward than normal to achieve proper angle

That was the trick for me, though I thought it was height in my case. Anyway I start standing almost in the middle of the tray, or I did before footholds.

I complained of the same problems with my SJ and still couldn't pull one off even after a few years of trying (without footholds). The best I could do is get the nose just under but it would pop up right away. I got a new SXR last year and I was pulling deep subs 3 minutes out no problem, so the problem isn't with me.

I stripped my SJ down this winter and did refoam and footholds amongst many other mods and am looking for a maiden voyage this weekend. I replaced 28lbs of waterlogged foam with 5lbs of new foam. I think that should help with subs. In total my SJ is now 32lbs lighter than it was last year.

If your a lightweight, waterlogged foam might make all the difference in the world. I'll let you know if mine is any better after the weekend. I'm hoping my porpoising has gone away too and in general the nose is down alot more.

man I hope mine isn't water logged.... Is there a sure way to tell? Its a 99 I bought it used, and it wasn't used much at all. 10-15 hours on it. its sat out of the water since 2004. I sealed all the holes with 5200, before I rode it.

What you described is exactly what happens to me, I can barley get the nose in. And when I do it pops right up.
I did one real good one, subbed pretty far, but I got knocked off under water lol!

you can find out if your foams wet when you put footholds in. Most likely it is, as i hear most Sj's get wet foam sooner or later. I can tell mine was wet because it drips water for a day and a half after riding. But dont let some wet foam hold you back, just ride it for a season, and put fresh stuff in for next season.

Thats what I do. I can hop no problem, I just cant seem to pitch it enough nose down. I land flat, or front of the hull. I can bunny hop up and level out great. Its just gettin the rotation up and foreward to get the nose to nose in at the right angle I need to work on.

Sounds like you have the technique going, just COMMIT and really
go at it like you are trying to shove the nose of your ski into the bottom
of the lake, and you will sub (or do a suicide sub over the bars, one or the other).

Hard to see from just a picture, but here I'm shoving down with my arms and
pulling up with my legs.....this was probably after about three quick
bunny hops to get the momentum up.

I guess I gotta work on the multiple hops. I"m gonna try the puttin my head down, that might help force me to push harder and take weight of the rear end. I need to install some footholds.

I learned subs on my third time out. All it really took was learning how to lift the back end up. And no you do not need foot holds. You can still lift the back end up pretty easy with out. I guess it makes it easier though with some slippery boots. Those things really grip the sides of the trays good.

ya, I can lift the back up. I wear wrestling shoes the grip the ski. Although serveral times my feet have come flyin out when I tried to really lift it up. Its just a matter of gettin the nose down far enough and carry enough speed to really do a good one.
