Hey guys I am new to the site and have a few noobie questions.....I am looking into buying two jetskis. I was looking into a superjet for myself and an x2 for the little lady. We both ride 2 stroke dirtbikes and its just to damn hot here in the summer so I was looking at something equivalent with H20 involved. Anyway I rode a few friends skis back in the day when they were only a few years old. I am curious if there is a year that I should be looking for in particular. I am sure it is the same as mx bikes as in certain years are more dependable then others. If there is a year that I should completely avoid as well. I am really excited about picking these up that I dont want to just rush into getting a few and realize later that I bought something that I shouldnt of. SO........all input is appreciated. stock x2's are all generally the same. they come with the 650 and the earlier years have a smaller carb. easily upgradable.
for a stock SJ, you basically have 3 choices:
90-93 which is the old style (squarenose) with a 650 engine.
94-95, still a squarenose but with a 701 cc engine.
96-present. this is the newer body style (roundnose) with the 701.
by the way, where do you live? i have an x2 that i might be willing to part with.

Like I said in my first post I am just trying to get a feel of what to look for and what to avoid! So is the 650cc or the 701cc more reliable? I am looking for the most reliability possible. All the Yamahas are reliable - you can't go wrong. If you can afford it, hold out for the 701 - you'll appreciate the extra cc's. Square vs. round is a matter of religion. The hulls are the same, but the top deck and pole is different. The square has a lower handlepole bracket which helps for freestlye, but you can add an aftermarket bracket to a round if you want to.

650s and 701s are both very reliable engines. the two engines are pretty much fully interchangable as are all of the driveline and electrical parts between the square and round should you choose to upgrade later.

^^^^What he said. And also I think the lady might be happpier on a Yamaha Waveblaster. B1's use the 701 motors like the SJ, and are far more reliable then a kaw 650 found in the x2. The blaster is a little eisier to ride, but is the closest thing to a dirtbike on the water. They only weight 320lbs, 30lbs heaivier then a SJ. All you need to make a SJ/Blaster scoot is a good pipe, head, and impeller.

i dunno... i think x2's are easier to mount because theyre lower. different beasts altogether, IMO. the yami is definately more reliable, but i dont think the hull is as fun as the x2 with a solid engine.

^^^^True, for screwing off with freestyle X2s are awsome. On a bouy course, and reliability the B1's got them beat. In the surf both are awsome. I can still fully flat water sub my B1! Blasters look way more sick then the X2 as well. If I could only have one, Id keep my B1. nutta 2 cent

I'm going to say get a blaster aswell. it's also a lean in type of ski that handles like a dirtbike on the water. You'd also have 2 yami's, so there's less to lean when wrenching and you'll have initerchangable parts beween the 2 ski's

No I dont hate her.. by all the responses I am going to look into a Blaster for her. Is there a year that is better than another? I cant wait to hit the water!! In the long run I think that she will enjoy the Blaster much more than a standup thats why I was looking at the x2. Get the SJ first, and see what she thinks of that. All Blaster 1s, from 93-95 were the same other then colors, they use a 61x cases+cylinder with single carb like the older SJs. The 96 B1 was a 62t case with 61x cyl. dual carb like the newer SJs. Make sure not to buy a blaster 2, they are completly different skis for the worst.
All B1's are great, and you can always swap carbs and cases down the road to make it exactly how you want it. Rather then picking a year, just pick a clean ski. The dual carb will be just a little faster, but single carbs hit awsome!
I love my B1, but I wish I had a SJ. But my friend I always ride with has a SJ, so we just trade off. Pretty much like you and the wife will probably be doing after she takes a few rides on the SJ. If she Motos in the dirt, she can deffinetly moto out in the water on a stand up. But I can still do freestyle on my B1, and Its nice to be able to sit down when I get tired, or on long river runs. 2 cent
