Freestyle New Thread - My Superfreak with TL is not running good! Help!

All your retard setting are based off your initial retard. If you have actual time (0 initial retard) at 30 degrees, then do a -3 initial retard, and max retard of 15, your final timing advance will be 12 (30-3-15=12).

Oh snap! Really? So when I think I have my final advance at 17 degrees, I actually have it at 12? And if I want my final timing to be 17, I don't actually set it to be 17, I set it to equal 17?

Example:
31 - 2 = 29

29 - 17 = 12??

When I should have it set to:
31 - 2 = 29

29 - 12 = 17 ??

I think you see the light. All the settings are relative. You never tell the TL you want a total of 17 degrees advance. You tell it how much to retard from the actual advance the triggers are physically set to.

So did u actually check pop off? I bet your carbs leak so bad your are not popping off. I recently added gaskets to stop a leaky fuel pump which would not allow the proper function of the carb.

Thanks dudes - that clears up a lot of fog for me.

That said, this still shouldn't really have affected my crazy poor performance ski right? It still sounds like I need less initial advancement on my timing @175psi. I maybe should shoot for 27-28 initial, and make sure I am really where I thought I was with my static setting.

I have a pop-off tester, the Mikuni one actually. But I haven't testing the pop-off since last season. I tried this weekend, but the vinyl tube that comes with the Mikuni pop-off gauge doesnt remotely fit into the filter hole. I had to trim it way down, and it still takes about 20 minutes to wedge it into the hole. Is there a better way to do it?

Leave the fuel pump body on and connect the popoff tool to the fuel inlet...? I think you might have to block the fuel return fitting. That would also tell you how bad your leak is affecting your popoff performance...

So here is a thought. Most of the advice I got here last weekend was that my timing advance was set just a bit too much forward (whether I did not check it well enough is up for debate).

Anyhow, if I have the Start Retard on, should that not at least drop the advance by some 20 degrees to allow it to start? At what RPM does the Start Retard switch off?

You know what else I am wondering now that I am thinking the whole system though... I have my stinger flow control valve set pretty much as low-pressure as it will go since I only had a single cooling line on a stock pump stator in my Superjet. I noticed both outlets coming off the side of my Freak are spraying HARD, meaning that same pressure is hitting the FCV and likely going straight into the exhaust. I'm wondering if I am flooding my waterbox and that's why it is taking forever to clear.

That's fine tuning stuff IMO.

Hopefully someone else will chime in on the pop off pressure. IIRC my carbs were always in the low 20's to high teens depending on setup when I had my SXR and on my current SJ. I'll can look back at my tuning logs tonight to refresh my memory.

I've run fine though with 55psi on 38's for all my Superjet riding. Would it really make that much difference by just tossing on a TL, that it wouldn't run well because the popoff wasnt changed?

Good point. If all you changed on your setup was TL. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

If possible, I would drive out to where your ski is at today after work and try a couple of the suggested tweaks/troubleshooting. That gives you more info to come back here with and maybe someone can get it sorted out before another weekend is shot wrenching.

Best I can do is get out there tomorrow after work. But I'm going to swing by Freestyle Factory Saturday morning if I can't figure this thing out.
