hey, i'm thinking about purchasing a jet-ski, i've rode waverunners before but I want a stand-up one, never rode on before. How hard is it to learn? MSRP is 6k for a brand new one, do they negotiate much? I want to spend 4-5 including tax/license.

i run a used car dealership and know wholesale #'s for cars like the back of my hand but wut is mark up like on PWC? I want a good deal obviously, but I don't want to low-ball the dealer with an offer where they don't make dick as I've been in their position many times selling cars.

p.s. to those who know I may consider the yamaha stand up as it's the same price range but I did some research on these boards and a lot of people prefer the kawasaki and say it's better for the novice rider.... any thoughts?

I was in your exact same boat. I wanted to get into freestyle though so I really wanted a superjet, but I was planning on buying new, and the kawi seemed like such a better deal. Well the more I researched and read the more I wanted a superjet. I had never ridden a stand up either. I ended up getting real lucky and found a 99 SJ in practically brand new condition. I bought it for 3g and I just started riding it 2 weeks ago. First day I sucked, but was determined to get it. Second day I did much better and now I'm hooked I love it to death. My advice decide what you want to do with the ski, freestyle, race, just play.. etc and choose which ski you want. I dont think either one will disapoint! Also I would look into used skis just to see whats around you. You might be suprsied what you might find!

thanks for the info guys, didn't realize the mark up wasn't much. i'm going to look into used as you said, tomorrow i'm going to sign up with http://www.npauctions.com/ a dealer auction for pwc's and boats, and bikes, etc... and see what the realistic market wholesale values are on these used.

I'd like to learn tricks even though I'm a speed freak when it comes to other activities. So I will consider the SJ too if I can come across something like you did with the 99.

Can you gys try to explain what is so difficult about a stand-up? is it just keeping balance?

I might end up getting a sit-down for my brother so we have 1 of each.

Take your weight into consideration as well. I have not spent much time on an SXR (only about 20 min of riding one in the surf) but I'm 6' 260 and the SXR is much more stable than the SJ is for a heavier rider. The biggest complaint that I hear with the SXR is that the nose is heavy which helps to plow through chop when you are racing. However with my fat arse on the back of the sxr the nose stays up where as when I ride a SJ I have to ride surf stance or the ski will porpoise. I'd try and hook up with some guys in your area who might let you take their ski out for a spin. If you could ride one or better yet both of them you would really be able to make a better and more informed decision.

similar to yamaslut's response:

if you just want to blaze around on a stand up or cruise through choppy waters, the SXR is for you.
if your interested in chasing boat wakes to hit or playing in the surf nothin beats the superjet.

Then again if your a plus size guy you might want to consider the SXR either way. Definately try to ride both if you want to be certain. If no one on this board is in your area (though im sure someone is) you might even want to try a jet ski rental deal. Not too sure how popular those are where you live, but I've seen a quite a few her on the South Texas Coast

you can get a used ski with some nice mods for much less than a new one. Look for a b-pipe, after market impeller, and foot holds for starters.

this will get you a great jump start on things rather than having to buy new then dump money into parts to get it running how you like.

Anyone know if that '03 SJ on ebay located in southern california sold. That would be an excellent set up for this guy.

If your new to it then regardless of whick one you purchase you will have to get used to it. The SXR is an awesome Cadilac of the stand ups, but the SuperJet is the VET. so you gotta decide what your looking for. EASY comfort or edgey and challenging.

it looks like used is going to be the only way to go after all. I'm in san jose california, i just stopped by a pwc dealer and they said they're not allowed to sell them brand new in CA, but I can bring one in from out of state and register it.

I was going to go new so I can get one with a warranty and get an extended warranty to have the peace of mind

I've been browsing www.boattrader.com and craigslist, and keeping an eye on ebay, these newer stand-up's are harder to come by, any other places I can look for now?
