Our Laptop is starting to give signs of dying....... It is about 5 years old now. I am going to use it just for surfing the net and such, but will be getting a new one for the Wife.

Intel vs AMD? Is one better?

We are looking at a min 3gb / 320 gb but will prob jump up to a 4gb/500gb setup. Will probably stick with HP since we have had pretty good luck with our HP currently.

Any advice appreciated.

I only deal with business laptops so I don't really have any recommendation unless you want to spend quite a bit more $$$ on one. I buy HP Elitebooks for everyone, very solid machines.

I bought an HP G60-235DX Notebook last summer... so far it's been a great non-work laptop.

16" wide screen
3GB RAM
web cam
etc
etc

price was right at the time, something like $700 with tax and the MS Excel/Word discs I bought for it.

Char's laptop recently "died".
I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Considering what she needed in a portable computer, I went and bought the Acer One netbook.
It's perfect for her to tote around the house and chat with her friends, and it's perfect for me to take to school for school purposes and perusing the Intarweb when I'm bored.
I wouldn't recommend it as a laptop replacement if you like big screens and normal sized keyboards.

PS: After I bought it, her old laptop came back to life. HD controller is slowly going bad.

Been happy with the HP we have had. Will stick with that most likely.

When I bought this HP I also bought her Microsoft Office "Teachers Edition" It came with the ablility to load it up 3 times on 3 different computers. I think she may have loaned it to someone to load. Not sure. Really do not want to have to spend the money again, hoping we can still load it on the new laptop when we get it.

My father and I both have Toshiba laptop's the past couple of years and have had no problems. Kristi has had her HP fixed twice this year at a cost of around $800... Her HP is really nice, but she could have bought a smaller new one by now. ....Hindsight
I guess it's just hit or miss. Some models are better than others. The model that I have is a Satellite A215.

just an fyi, you can load MS Office as many times a you want, just like any MS software, Just need to call them to say you had to format.

If you really don't do a bunch of power hungry stuff on a Ltop then you can't beat the $200 prices at http://www.hcditrading.com/. This place has SUPER cheap systems. I have a buddy that has bought about $10K worth of stuff from there in the past month. He says that they are great looking. Mostly look new.

But for a great deal be patient and watch the slickdeals website. They will shoot something up there that is just what your looking for in a few weeks.
