Thanks Matt, some great info there.

I consider computers tools not toys. I don't game, never have, never will so I am way out of my element on this one. I think my nephew is on the right track with his component selections so I'm just going to step back and just help out with funding his project.

New egg or instore such as frys. He will definitely need a bigger psu than 430. He will also need some sort of liquid cooling for the processor at least. The stock fan sucks.

You could always go with a cooler master v8 or v10 instead of liquid cooling. It's just as efficient and no liquid. I've had a rig where the coolant leaked in my MB and fried it.

I have use stock coolers on overclocked CPU's for 10 years...with a good case full of fans. Loud but zero issues.

No need for an ssd for his budget and what he wants to do. Only advantage over raid is faster random access times.

Well, my Sister is a full time artist so he was born and raised in a very creative world. He has been showing and selling his art at her gallery for years now and even gets in on some of her bigger studio tours. They always switch up medias and are always learning new methods so rendering is just another artistic media.

EDIT: He is currently using 3D animation software called Blender.

This was one of his first renderings;

And this is one of the last assignments he did for school.

He does some great work, very cool that he gets assingments like this in school.
I am not even that old but when i was his age we had computer class to teach us how to type and yes we had to boot from actual 5 n 1/4 inch floopys on two color monitors, haha. oh how the times have changed!

Yea, but he's 14, and can't exactly drop 600 bucks on ssd's -_- He can always add one later if he wants, and his motherboard should have a sata 3 capability in order to fully unleash an ssd.
