Need advise on vid. editing software

I make alot of helmet camera videos, and have just been using the VERY simple software that came with the camera. I'm ignorant to software for the most part. Can any of you guys recommend any software for editing. Doesn't have to be any high end deal, just needs some basic features like slow-mo.

My my helmet cam records in a format called DivX. Some software won't read it.

Thanks for the help.

I would just use windows movie maker, it comes free with windows xp. Very simple to use and has lots of features for a free easy program.

i tend to like pinnacle studio, the most recent version is a memory hog but has a lot of cool features very easy to use. It has built in dvd authoring tools and menus etc.

I used Windows movie maker and Pinnacle studio. Movie maker is free and easy to use. Pinnacle has alot more features though. I would use Pinnacle more, but like ski4 said it's a memory hog. Runs kinda slow on my laptop.

I just got vegas video 6 and it is unbelievable. You could use this program for a year and still not figure out its full capabilities. He was looking for cheap and easy thats why I suggested just using movie maker.

I am not a fan of pinnacle, even though I used it to make my last movie. It crashes a lot and is a HUGE memory hog. It is also impossible to make the movies very clear. I have seen stuff from vegas and it makes my pinnacle stuff look like crap (clarity wise).

i don't know korn, i still don't see how the software makes the importing from analog tapes clear or fuzzy, i think it was a hardware problem somehow.

anything i import from straight digital looks just like the source material, no quality loss. and that was on studio dv, 7, 9 and 10, i think you have a faulty piece of hardware bugging your rig

alright...first things first...dealing with any video stuff in any decent capacity is going to be a memory hog...now, that being said, let me throw my two pennies into this arguement...

1. the divx format is kinda wierd for a recording format, can you give more specifics on your helmet cam set up?

but i digress...

ron is spot on with the windows movie maker recomendation...free is pretty cheap last time i checked and it will do the slow-mo's, etc that you are looking for...plus for the beginner editor it has alot of ready made effects that wil add a little more...

after that i would go with vegas, solid pc editing platform that will come pretty quick if you have used WMM. basically more effects, etc to learn but well worth it...

adobe premeire is another solid program but will cost some change if you wnt to go that route...

if you rock a mac then for you the goods editing stuff is final cut...not sure what version jerry uses but he kills it regardless...

in the end it all depends on what you want to do with your footage...

internet clips for friends...WMM...
dvds for family...vegas...
dvds for sale...premiere or final cut...

go beyond that and you get into the avid stuff like adrenaline which retails for a smooth 25K...but that a whole diff can of worms...

It's a Samsung Sportscam. It only holds about 16 minutes of film at a time, but the camera body is smaller than a wallet.

Will the movie maker program work with that DivX crap?

Sorry, but I'm ignorant to all things computer.

it's a memory hog in the fact that the program alone for studio this time around is over 6 gb's and works mucho slowly as it bogs down the ram. of course video is a hog and editing is very cpu intensive , that goes with out saying.

\divx is a great format, i have never seen anything record directly in it though?. i think studio works with it, i know it can output into it, in just not sure about capturing it, not sure about windows either, or any of the major programs for that matter. most work with mini dv, digital 8 or the newer HD formats rolling out on the market now

If you're video editing, an external hard drive is almost a must. All the clips I work with are usually around a 35 to 40 gig file. For example the lanier video I'm working on is a set of 6 files, all being around 35 gigs each. Vegas doesnt bog the cpu down at all, but memory is getting very low.

Remember one thing, its not the program that makes the video. Its the person using it. You can do some pretty insane stuff with any of the software.

I agree on the multiple external hard drives.

here at work we have mutiple Terrabyte raid arrays.

that makes it easy.

at home, I have to move 20-25 gb files across my network and share hard drive space on my sons machine to edit down an hour of DV video.

Adobe premiere 6.5 works really well, and doesnt hog as much system resources as some of the newer Adobe premier products in my experience.

it takes a healthy machine ( fast processor) with alot of ram and BIG hard drive to edit video though, or rather it takes those things to do it easily.
