My home PC is incredibly slow. When I first got it, it was fine. My son them tried downloading IM on it, ended up on a bad website, and then we were barraged with XXX rated popups, viruses, etc. I have since added SpySweeper and adaware which keeps the nasty pop ups away, but my system absolutely crawls now.

Is there a decent program I can run to speed this heap up? I was thinking of contacting www.plumchoice.com but it's a $130.00 for a scan, clean and 'tune-up'.

Any suggestions from you computer savvy folks? Thanks.

It's a Dell system running Windows XP if that matters.

Tren Micro seems to be pretty good at getting rid of viruses, pop ups and spyware...

Also recommend AdAware SE for daily/weekly scrubbing.

Good luck...

do a system restore. revert it to the pre-porn state. it takes about 10 minutes and costs $0.

Most real viruses disable sys restore that is built in to win xp.

I would not waste one more second trying anything.

Complete reload from XP cd.

You need to make friends with someone who knows how to reinstall from scratch, or jump in and do it yourself.

Copy all your files to cd or somewhere else safe, then install from scratch and before you do anything, install Firefox and use that for internet browsing. That will help tons.

Get a good antivirus program, make sure you have a subscription for updates, use a firewall of some sort.

Or, even better, download Ubuntu and use that instead of Windows. I do on both our computers at home.

adaware and norton works for me. But if sysrestore doesnt work, then your pretty much gonna need to reinstall everything...

I've had a few email viruses that took over my outlook email and was sending emails, but Norton noticed that emails were being sent every 5 seconds or so, with those random title like "Sally how are you!?", a scan caught it, Norton costs a yearly fee, but thats for the constant virus profile updating associated with it. Firefox all the way! I have my computer set so it scans for adware once a week, and norton goes every three days. I also do it manually just in case it gets disabled, every once in a while.
