My custom footholds...opinions?

Thank you!

I see what you mean. I knew that was tight and it was already causing a problem and this was before I did anything else. I think I'm going to make it much bigger.

You're talking about removing this whole section?

Also, not to sound like a pee-pee heard or arrogant but say if I did happen to make it to the shape of a certain shoe, most likely wouldn't I have to always use that shoe?

there you go...

There ya go! I think thats what I'm going to do! Sounds like it would work the best and result in a much better hold than what I currently am working with. Just need to open up the toe area a little more.

remember the padding, turf and shoes will take up some space too...

it's best to make them big and pad them to fill in...

definatly clear some more space for padding like people suggested already. I have no padding on the top of my holds, I did run all summer long though without shoes either, I kind of got used to it, never got blisters or bruises. Maybe I got lucky, but it wasnt comfortable at all.

I'm a lot like you in that I can't stand wearing shoes. One of the primary reasons I went with a flatdeck on my SN was so that I could run kiteboarding straps and ride barefooted. The picture where you blacked off the back section is going to be the way to go. One thing to consider when going barefooted is how your feet will withstand the abuse. Turf will chew up your ankles and the tops of your feet in a good weekend of riding. I haven't completely decided what I'm going to do for my next hull when I go back to holds but I thinking of just running padding on the top with no turf.

One other thing I'll add... I made footholds the first time around thinking I'd save money. If you have to replace the turf and padding a second time because you don't like the holds you made, then you pay double plus footholds later. I know this from experience...

looking great!!!!

I would remove more out of the mid foot and toe area... you will still need padding and turf... and that can amount to 3/4"-1"... you can't remove too much, but it can be too small....

Alright will do! It will just about fit my shoe which is good! lol. I was originally not going to run padding...but I think I definitely am now. Which thickness padding do you recommend?

b stock is fine... the 25mm padding is only for the deck... I don't put padding on the sides, just turf. Some people put a layer of 8mm on the gunwales to protect their knees...

I highly recommend padding the top of the gunwales - it makes a big difference. You need something fairly firm though. My secret padding is to use Disney Princess hopscotch pads from Wally World. Yes I know! But they get turfed over. I think I have Cinderella on the left and Sleeping Beauty on the right. But, it's closed cell foam so it doesn't absorb water, and it's just the right thickness and firmness to make great gunwale padding.

I’m doing a build right now and am in the middle of doing my footholds also. I prefer tray length bar style holds over the single space holds so I always shape my own. I have found that making a template first will help greatly to get the sizing of your holds correct. To make a template you must first figure the size of your finished foot space and then add for glass and turf. I don’t use under pad on the top or sides of my holds so I added 1/4” for turf and another 3/16” for glass a (7/16”) total to the side and top. I’m using 25mm or 1” under pad so I added 1”+1/4”+3/16” or a (1-7/16”total) to the bottom to get my templates over all measurements in the foam. They look large but when glass and turf are added they will fit just right and look something like the last two finished shots. No matter what shape holds you use the template sizing for turf and glass is similar so I hope this helps.
