SXR motors beat next step?

Location
masshole
So after my SXR sat for a month or 2 I pulled the motor and the crankshaft wouldnt spin popped the head off and I have moisture in there but the cylinders still look good. Looking for advice on the next step. New sbt motor or is there someone on here I can send my motor to rebuild it. Or should I just strip that baby down myself and do new pistons and new crank.(never built a motor but mechanically inclined) trying to stay around 800-1000$

sbt would be my last choice
strip it down your self
there are plenty of peeps on the x to guide you along the way
what is your location? masshole?

western Massachusetts im going to start the tear down tomorrow I will post any questions any advice going into it is much appreciated

take your time label all the bolts... get the torque specs to put it back together. make sure u get all of the crankcase sealent off the cases. use a razor and keep it flat so u dont dig into the case

you will need a special tool to remove the pto coupler and the flywheel uses a bolt to push it off the crank i think its like 14mm
either way you can get crank out w/o removing both
then slide over to a dealer woh should have both tools and it shouldnt take more than 5 min for both
upon reassm use oem crank seals! if you use aftermarket you will be doing again!

We are in CT and have flywheel pullers here. If you dont feel like buying one. I use a flywheel holder first to pull the coupler off then I pull the flywheel

Get an SBT crank, some OEM seals, a new gasket kit and a wiseco top end kit and go from there. It's pretty basic to rebuild. Might want to take the cylinder somewhere for a quick hone.

Do NOT buy anything from SBT. Again, NEVER buy anything from SBT. "Salt Bore Time-bomb."

I would buy OEM. I have bought many OEM cranks. I have had a crank rebuilt but it was cheaper for me to buy a new OEM crank, and just simply more feasible. I also run OEM or Pro-X pistons. I think you'll be able to tackle the project just fine. If you are going through the trouble of repairing your motor, bore up to the next size piston and start fresh on all accounts.

Pipe Wrench takes the coupler off.

Agree with boring it over a size so the motor is completely fresh.

looks like i will be boring it, when i bring it to the machine shop do I give them a measurement of what i want? example tell them i want it .25 over? also a recommended boring size to get the most out of a completely stock ski.

If you are boring it you should have the pistons in hand with you. A good machine shop will match the piston to each cylinder. There is a measured tolerance (clearance) between the piston and cylinder.
I prefer to use OE crank seals and wrist pin bearings ( but that's probably my OCD). And if you rebuild the carbs while it's apart use oem rebuild kits. I have had poor results from aftermarket carb kits.

Just my $.02. Take your time and follow the manual.

1st over will prob be fine i use prox or oem pistons
i dont like wiesco
and ill only put wsm in a beater wr3
there are good crank builders out there but sbt isnt one of them
frosty has had really good work out of patch
pm him for contact info
also note when re assm on top of piston there is a arrow , it points to the exhaust port

recommended piston size?

Do not bore until the pistons are in your hand. The bore size is on the box. Whoever you order the pistons from should be able to tell you what size. I am not a fan of pro-x pistons, because mine crumbled after water injestion and took out my cases and cylinder. The wiseco's don't last as long , but when they blow, big chunks don't fall off of them like the cast ones (saving other engine parts)

I hear a lot of people complain about SBT cranks, but have yet to hear anyone have 'experience' with a problem with them. Yes, SBT used to build bad motors about 12 years ago. BUT the cranks are trued and welded and half the cost of OEM.

heres a sbt crank problem
built motor sbt crank wiesco pistons in a 1200 pv yamaha
rear bearing came apart , bearing cage cut through the crank seals and as the boat was parked on the beach while we were riding other skis it waterinjested from the cut crank seal and bilge water
this crank made it about 4 hrs

it was 08-09 ish
ive seen several thrust washers/lower rod bearings fail , normally in 1st few hrs
very frustrating when you install a motor for a customer and it fails instantly and its not your fault
do you eat the labor and return shipping?
lets get back on subjet i dont wanna bash sbt i install them all the time but never in my ski , i ride hard and want a good, lasting product!
i love sbts daytona burgers and dogs !
