Motor mount bolt snaped in hull! DOH!!

I was pulling out a broken motor mount and one of the bolts snaped!!:banghead: :banghead:

Not the one in the rubber, but the bolt broke in the hull insert.at:

There is not enough bolt sticking out to grab with vice grips, I think an easy out is my only option. I'm worried, I have never had much luck with an easy-out, but I don't think I have much choice.

Any suggestions or input is appreciated.

There are mant different easy outs,The ones that I find the best are square,I believe they are proto ,they don,t snap they just bend if the bolt is to tight.but likely if the bolt snaped ,it was seized and an easyout won,t work.try letting it soak for a day with penatrating oil.

LBE, The brass threaded insert really doesn't embed down too much (see picture-FX-1 mount). There is a air space under that mount. If you end up ripping the whole insert out, use a good epoxy to glue it back in because it's SMC. I'm thinking it's your FX-1....right?

That happend to me on my SXR. I started with a small bit and kept drilling it out going up a size at a time. Then when it wasa the right bolt size I tapped it and it held up great.

I did the same thing on my squarenose last winter. Just center punch the bolt as good as you can, and then use a drill bit and drill to whatever size the ez-out you use recommends. And take your time, mine came out easily. A reverse drill bit is essentially the same thing as an ez-out/extractor. Do not drill it and tap it.

MAKE SURE IT IS IN THE CENTER!

Like Luke said, use a center punch and make a pretty good spot for a small drill bit to start, that way it doesnt walk on you. Then keep going up one drill size at a time, then use the easy out, and heat! Letting it soak in penetrating oil may help as well...
If it ends up being too difficult just pull the insert out and get it that way, then glue it back in...

Ive used reverse drill bits on things too and they work just the same, to me. The cone shaped extractors are ez-outs.

I thought about that too, but I figured welding it would cause too much heat and hurt the fiberglass/smc whatever it is. My dad said the same thing. I wouldnt do it.

weld a ROD like the topof a 'T', to the bolt and spin it back and forth, try to turn it in some ,to work some penetrant oils down there

Be sure to drill the hole with the exact drill bit the ez-out or reverse drill bit recommends.

I agree, reverse drill bits work much better then any easy out I've seen. Good Luck with it

you might be able to get a dremel with a wheel cutting bit in there and slot it for a big screwdriver. Even if you have to go into the fiberglass a little you could glass it
