Dam,I got hosed for one as well! :( the seller said that they were new Mitsuba taiwan starters lol.
I e-mail the seller to tell them that is is illegal (thru e-bay or anywhere else) to advertise falsely and that I want a refund as soon as I return it. They actually freaking had a shipping confirmation within an hour of receiving paypal so it was too late to cancel

Bull:):):):), they have the shipping ticket done, but I guarantee you that it has not shipped out yet at that point.

I'll post his response when I get it. This guy has a pretty high positive feedback so I don't know how he's getting away with this crap

These are the signs that something is up:

1. Product Description:

"Replaces Part Numbers & Specifications"

Yamaha 64X81800-00
Mitsuba SM13-237
SIERRA MARINE 18-6290

2. Also look at the writing on the rear cap. Mitsuba, etc. should be written straight, but writing is curved on these starters.

The seller that Waterfreak linked.

Regardless, if you see a starter that claims to be OEM Mitsuba and it costs $50, you can most likely conclude that it's chit.

Discussion had moved to the second seller that waterfreak posted. My comments were about that posted second listing.

Ahhh gotcha :bigok:. I'm just hoping I didn't get a bunch of people to buy a $50 paperweight

First listing may be legit. Like kevbo said, someone probably got a closeout of some new oem kawi or other brand parts.

The kawi style dual oring snouts are nice, but be very careful when changing out and reclocking the rear on the starter to yami. Sometimes the orings (square profile) between sections are glued on mitsuba starter's made for kawi. You need to carefully cut/break the rear loose without stretching the oring or you are screwed when reassembling. Use loctite or antiseize on the bolt threads.
We like to wet sand the entire starter after rebuild and paint with multiple coats of epoxy paint. This bridges across the orings and will help prevent water intrusion over time as corrosion always breaks the oring seal. If you repaint, remember to mask the grounding surfaces as well.

I found these a little while back. http://www.spidermarine.com/showitem.aspx?&id=108160&name=100%25%20New%20Mitsuba%2012%20Volt%20PWC%20Starter#xRef Since it was mitsuba, and says made in japan it caught my interest. I am thinking about buying a few to keep on hand for personal spares and also if I got a side job this summer on a couch.

I emailed the sales dept, looking for maybe a shipping deal if I bought a few(shipping seemed expensive to me on these). Also mentioned that other than OEM starters have a bad rep and I would be looking for good starters. Asked if they were OEM quality. Well that ticked him off and I got a rude response about my email address not being professional(Thought it just said my actual name and not my actual address), and its ubsurd to believe that other than OEM are not good starters.

They are not OEM I guess, never got much further than that with them, but they say many PWC repair shops use their starter with great success. Any opinions?

Those are definately not Oem mitsuba starters. Also remember that PWC repair shops replace starters for your average occasional couch rider who has stock compression and only rides occasionally. Most of us have higher compression and much higher use so performance of same starter will be much different result.

Agreed. Most couch riders aren't taking on water and prime, crank, crank, crank, crank, repeat!

Googling the part number he gives for that bendix (SMU5100) comes up with a product made by a company called 'Arrowhead'.

Not sure what's up with that.

Edit: Arrowhead Electrical is an aftermarket parts company, not OEM. These units sell for $40-$60 new in other places. So while may be old stock, it's not OEM old stock.

just noticed that they remove the Mitsuba name from the ad . I guess they didn't want to be associated with counterfeits

I just got mine and the internals appear to be real. The only difference is the armature is potted in yellow resin instead of the white that is in all my old 90s OEM starters.
