Chapter 1: Setting up for the first time
Step 2: Connecting with a USB cable
The following section describes how to connect your camcorder to a computer using a USB cable and make the computer recognize your camcorder.
Connection image (USB cable and USB jack)
You can use a USB or an i.LINK cable to connect your camcorder to a computer. <Details>
Connecting with a USB cable is good for copying pictures and sound recorded on a tape to the computer, copying files from a "Memory Stick" to a computer, and copying files to a "Memory Stick." (only the models with a "Memory Stick" slot)
Before performing the following procedures, make sure you have installed Picture Package on your computer. <Details>
Note that if you do not turn on the power and make the connections in the order described in the following steps, your computer may not recognize your camcorder.
Note
* When connecting your camcorder to a computer, make sure you insert the connector in the correct direction. Do not insert the connector forcibly as it may damage the cable or your camcorder.
1 Turn on the computer.
Close all applications running on the computer.
For Windows 2000/Windows XP
Log on as Administrators.
2 Connect your camcorder to a power source, then slide the POWER switch to select the PLAY/EDIT mode.
Use the AC Adaptor as the power source.
Tip
* Slide the POWER switch to select the CAMERA-TAPE mode (for models without a "Memory Stick" slot, select the CAMERA mode), and you can view pictures that your camcorder is seeing on the computer (PC Camera feature).
3 Insert a recorded cassette into your camcorder.
4 Set up your camcorder to enable USB streaming.
1 For models with a "Memory Stick" slot
In PLAY/EDIT mode
Select [USB SELECT] [ STREAM] in the menu settings of your camcorder.
For selecting the menu, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder.
In CAMERA-TAPE mode
Select [USB CAMERA] [ STREAM] in the menu settings of your camcorder.
For selecting the menu, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder.
For models without a "Memory Stick" slot
Select [USB STREAM] [ON] in the menu settings of your camcorder.
For selecting the menu, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder.
2 Connect the USB cable to the USB jack on the camcorder firmly.
For the location of the USB jack, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder.
For models with the Handycam Station, connect the USB cable to the USB jack on the Handycam Station.
3 Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB jack on your computer.
For tips on the recommended connection, click details. <Details>
[USB Streaming Tool] for viewing image starts up.
(It may take some time for the computer to recognize the camcorder when you connect the USB cable for the first time.)
When [USB Streaming Tool] does not start up automatically, select [Picture Package], [Handycam Tools], then [USB Streaming Tool].
4 If [Found New Hardware Wizard] appears, click [Next] and complete the installation.
In Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), the following screen appears (depends on setup).
Select [No, not this time] and click [Next] to complete the installation.
5 If you use Windows 2000/Windows XP and the dialogue box prompting you to confirm the digital signature appears, click [Yes] or [Continue Anyway].
Tip
* In this dialogue box, clicking [Yes] or [Continue Anyway] will not cause any problem.
5 Click (Playback) on [USB Streaming Tool].
Make sure that the movie recorded on a tape is played back.
6 Make sure you hear the sound, then click [Next].
Note
* When you cannot hear the sound, select another device by clicking .
7 Adjust the image quality, then click [Next].
Adjusting the slider in the (+) direction makes the image quality higher and adjusting the slider in the (-) direction makes the image quality lower. If the movie is not smooth, adjust the slider in the (-) direction.
Note
* When you adjust the image quality, the picture and the sound break off for a moment.
8 Adjust the brightness, then click [Next].
Adjusting the slider in the (+) direction makes the picture brighter, and adjusting the slider in the (-) direction makes the picture darker.
9 Click [Done].
[Picture Package Menu] starts up.
The settings from steps 6 to 8 are saved. From the second time on, [USB Streaming Tool] does not start up when you connect the USB cable.
Tip
* To adjust the image quality and brightness when connecting your camcorder to the computer after the second time, select [Start], [Programs] ([All Programs] for Windows XP), [Picture Package], [Handycam Tools], and [USB Streaming Tool], then start up [USB Streaming Tool].
Recommended USB cable connection
Connect your camcorder as shown in the following illustration.
* Connect the USB cable from your camcorder to the USB jack on the computer and make sure no other USB devices are connected.
* If your computer has a USB keyboard and a USB mouse as standard equipment, leave them connected and connect the camcorder to an available USB jack with the USB cable.
Notes
* Operation is not guaranteed if you connect two or more USB devices to the computer.
* Operation is not guaranteed if you connect the USB cable to the USB jack on a keyboard or USB hub.
* Make sure to connect the cable to the USB jack on the computer.
* Operation is not guaranteed on all the recommended environments.
To disconnect the USB cable (only the models with a "Memory Stick" slot)
For Windows 2000/Windows Me/Windows XP
When [USB CONNECTING] is displayed on the screen of your camcorder, follow the procedure below to disconnect the USB cable.
If [USB UNCONNECTED] is displayed on the screen of your camcorder, do step 4 and 5 below.
If [USB CONNECTING] and [USB UNCONNECTED] are not displayed on the screen of your camcorder, do only step 5 below.
1 Click the [Unplug or eject hardware] icon on the task tray.
2 Click [Safely remove Sony Camcorder] ([Unplug or eject hardware] in Windows 2000/Windows Me).
3 Click [OK] in Windows 2000/Windows Me.
4 Touch [END] on the screen of your camcorder.
5 Disconnect the USB cable from the camcorder and computer.
Notes
* Do not disconnect the USB cable while the access lamp is lit.
* Make sure to disconnect the USB cable before turning off your camcorder.
