looking for advice

I just bought a 1991 650 superjet with a blown motor. I figured while I had the motor out fixing it or replaceing with a SBT motor. I mght as well go ahead and do some of the things I will want to do later when I get better riding the ski. I am looking to get into do some freestlye type things I have a couple of couchs now and find they are fun for top end running but I want something to rip up the lake behind my house.


So here is my questions:

1) What should I do rebuild the motor as a 701 ported?
2) What mods to the ski should I do while the motor is out?


Oh yea I have read so of the buildups I cant wait til I can learn how to ride this thing to appreciate the posts.

the only things worth keeping from a 650 are the crank and carb. Sell the rest. If you want a 701 for freestyle buy 61x (single carb and cheaper) or 62t cases. then add a 61x cylinder and build from there.

If you want to go with a 701, and plan on using SBT, they will not let you trade in a 650 as a core as far as I know. Even if they did, you would have an SBT motor, which does not have the best track record. I know they offer a waranty, but you don't want to have to replace motors even if the new one is "free." Plus you don't want to mod an SBT motor, and I am pretty sure that would void the warranty...and you don't want to ride a stock boat...

Best bet $ wise would be to do what wavedemon says, if you feel comfortable rebuilding a motor. Other wise I would call pall at Jr.Magoos, and see what his recomendations are for you with your budget in mind.

You probably bought a 650 with a blown motor to save money. I encourage you to keep saving money by build your own 701. You can get all the answers and probably a lot of the parts you need here at x-h2o.

you *could* do it but you would be limiting your power with those cases/reeds/manifold. upgrade to a 61x bottom half at least.

The 6m6 cases with a 61x cylinder on it works great, especially ported and with a b-pipe.

Yes, the 61x cases are better, but if you are on a tight budget, the 6m6 will make a very tight, reliable 701.

What is wrong with the engine?

if you are going to pay for porting and a b pipe you might at well bay $100-$150 for the 61x cases...

I'm not arguing with you, but IF I was young and on a budget, the $150-200 for cases would make a big difference. And IMO that moeny would be much better spent putting a Solas Concorde 13/17 prop on it.

I think you would get much more for your money in a prop, then swtiching between 61x and 6m6 cases.

There's nothing wrong with the 6m6. I run one and am plenty happy. Ive dusted plenty of 701s and SXR's with it and it actually hits rather well on the bottom. One of my best freinds has a stock ported 701 with a head and b pipe. My ski actually hits harder on bottom and he has about 1 mile an hour on me top end. I think its a great cheap alternative. being as though 701 stuff is through the roof. Mine has been bored and ported. This motor is almost indestructable also. Ill hold it wide open throttle all day long and not blink an eye. Dont get me wrong the 701 has more potential in the long run but for for the average rider you can build a 6m6 with plenty of power that will eat up limited 701s all day long for cheap. Your best option if you want porting is to find an old protec cylinder thats been done. They did a bunch of them and you can pick them up cheap. If your going to Fork out the money to buy porting dont waste your time with the 6m6. Its all a cost verse power issue with me.So Ya'll keep talking bad about the 650 and keep the parts cheap for me. And when people ride the ski and i tell them its a 6m6 I love watching the expression on there face.The round nose I'm building is getting The 701 stuff but only because I just want to build something with insane power.
