Lifter Wedges?

Those are junk, go with a single footstrap in front and ride surf stance.

Thanks for the quick reply....i kinda figured they wouldnt be that great (15 bucks) I will definitely take a look at the straps. Hopefully i can get em ready by the 28th for my first real surf run

I use 2 Dakine footstraps at the rear (for lake, large boat wake jumping), attached them using the Yamaslut method. I like them; easy/quick job, inexpensive, don't have to tear up a virgin hull, very effective.

Cheap lifters are easy to make with foam garage floor mats and contact cement. You can shape them any way you want. I like mine for wake hopping etc. BUT if you build them up thick enough to work good they end up taking up a lot of room in the tray. I am going to get some Tom21 footholds here pretty quick. Some people seem to think that getting out of the straps can be dangerous, but I have never tried them - just something to read about before you decide.

I used to have a set of the lifters on my superjet. I thought they were great for what I needed them for at the time, (subs, wake jumping). The thing about footholds is not just that they hold you in, they make the tray wider, making it much more stable so the ski won't rotate as much in the air which can end in some painful ankle injuries.

If you plan on riding surf I would go with straps set-up surf stance style, not back to back at the rear of the ski. This way you can rip it surf stance for a season then when you add footholds you can still use the straps when you're slashin around.

Make your own foot holds! Just cut the tray of your ski and carve out the foam. Then glass over it with a few layers, new turf and your done!

The best part is you can make them whatever size you want. Way cheaper than buying foot holds, and better than lifters.

Even if you've never worked with fiberglass before, if you can read directions-mixing the resin and hardener, then you can make it happen. There are tons of helpful videos on youtube that will walk you through simple glassing techniques.

Awesome... now go to Ace hardware and get some stainless steel thread inserts in the 10/32 size and epoxy them to your tray.

This is a good example of 2 straps in the back. They are snug fit to my wrestling shoes. That fit works well, I installed the right one first and rode it, dialed it in then attached the left side. You can see in one of the pics I moved the right side a few times. It's perfect now.

Note-prep the tray properly and goop the epoxy on thick. Don't get any epoxy on the threads.

I havent really decided how im gonna position the strap yet... I ride mostly with my right foot back. Should i put the strap more towards the front and put my left foot in it or put it more towards the back and put my right foot in it? Or some other position?

X2 I always make my own stuff. Its easier, cheaper and better. Your SJ set up looks identicle to mine. I always hated the "premade footholds" because your riding stance is limited to only one position and I cannot stand how the top protruding part of the foothold pokes into your ankle if your foot isn't exactly in the foothold. I like to move my feet in different positions along the bar footholds on my tray as I ride. This set up also widens your tray considerably. I can't even ride an SJ with out them now, feels like my feet are crammed together.

I ride mostly left foot forward, right foot back. Actually my feet are all over the place depending on trick, waves or whatever. But when it comes to air time or getting inverted, I stuff my feet in the straps.

I don't ride with my feet constantly in them.

Freestyle poser
I just ordered a strap to go up front. I'm going to try it with just a small rear lifter first and see how it works. I want to keep the back of the tray clear for when I'm not doing freestyle.

I would throw in a rear foothold, but it's an old semi-junked hull that isn't worth investing in that much. If I decide I want to cut in footholds I'll get a nicer hull first.

Im stuck between waiting to get footholds or just getting some straps. I dont ride in the surf but I still want something to hold my feet in-place. Footholds seem the most popular for freestyle, but foot-straps are a lot cheaper and seem a lot easier to install. So what im wondering is how you all feel about using foodstraps in the place of foothold, and if you are currently doing this, what is the position you decided tp use and how well it is working for you?
