Lets talk about Keihin carbs

GASKETS FOR CHAMP BRAP!
What makes people use Mikunis over Keihin's beside carbs/parts availablilty?

Back in 1990 I ran a modded 42mm that was a good carb on my 88' 650SX. I replaced the stock 28mm little baby carb(good small carb too, not top end though).
They are very easy to tune IMO. I think they are a quality carbs.
Whats the scoop these days?

Oh and do they offer anything bigger than 42mm?
I see Harry at Group K seems to like them.

TIA

Hey NiKad:

where the heck do you ride in victorville. I used to live there in the 80's and there aint no water for miles. I used to be stationed at what was George Air force base. I've heard that placed has majorly changed but I didn't know they added lakes. Just kidding LOL

I think Harry was just selling the machine shop work to make the 42's work on the Kawasakis.

If he was to sell a Kawie guy a Mikuni... then they would need a carb, intake, F/A...

If he sells you a Keihin, he sells you dremel work on your stock manifold and F/A....

For a long time he was doing this. He was even pushing the Keihins for Yamahas. I always figured he had a huge supply or a cheap supply of Keihins he acquired somewhere.

Now from his Resto Mod paper, he is preaching the SBN 44 on the Kawie 650. Go figure.

The stock Keihin 40 on my 95 X2 worked flawlessly. I switched to a SBN 44 Silver Series carb and it work great too...

But I recently sold it and got a Keihin Blue 42 and I am trying it next. Sooner or later... probably later... I will get a Novi SBN 48!

A pair of Keihin 42's on 61x cases were the hot set up for racing before the 62t cases came along. Dual 44 were just a little too much for the 61x's . . . . .

One of the best running 440's we ever had used a single Keihin 42, nice carb and easy to tune.

Harry is pretty good about changing his mind as to what works, if you read all his stuff you'll see many things that contradict earlier statements. He's stilll a pretty good guy though.

I have a read a lot of Harry's articles.

I used to be 100% all for Group K. I had them do some engine work for me once... after I seized up using too small jets in a SBN 44 on a Kawie 750, they were little help in finding the propper sizes or even a ball park. He wanted to sell me a Keihin 42 instead without any help what so ever.

Then recently he changes his mind and starts recommending Mikunis for Kawie 650s when for years it was always a Keihin 42. Figures.

A baseline on what jets to use would have made a world of difference to me.

Next engine I have ported will go to Paul Lehr. He seems to be more than helpful to everyone.

Selling all X2 and 650 parts - message me!
I have had great performance from my 40 Kehins in all my 650 Kaw's - my TS and my JS conversion ski engines are stroked and the 40's work fine and are easy to tune. My 750 big pin X2 had the original duals and I opted for a 40 Keihin there as well. Not too happy. The ZXI engine with a single Keihin has a very narrow range where it will run right. I believe I could send that carburetor to Harry and have him open it up, eh?
I am also going retro - for a reason - I just bought a nice 1993 X2 basket case and it's gonna be a "build for the kids". It came with a 28 for some reason (laying in the basket) and since it's gonna be for the kids, the 28 is a good idea for now - let them learn. Watch for my build thread soon. Prof
