Laptop won't boot

Usually when the hard drive is dead it will say no disk found... and your computer will not get that far into the boot up process.

Pop in the windows cd-rom and try to do a fresh install of windows... (if you have everything backed up already)
If windows installs, your good to go... if not, it should display a message why windows cannot install... or when you go to install windows you might not have a hard drive show up at all to install windows to.

Easiest way to find out if the hard drive it recognized is to press F10 (or maybe F2) when the computer is booting up,
This should take you into the BIOS and you should be able to see your hard drive under one of the sub menus.

I've been getting along very well with $300 - $500 laptops. I have one HP that I bought new in the spring of 2011 and it runs like a champ. The other one is a $400 Samsung that I got earlier this year, and I have no problems with it either. Unless you're gaming or something, inexpensive laptops can be a really good investment. Here's one on sale at Best Buy for less than $300 and it has good reviews. My $500 Gateway that I use for work is champ too. This fall, it will be two years old, and the only thing that I've had to replace was the power cord ($40.00.)

schep, she's done.
Replacement hard drives are cheap and easy to install... take your old one out and hit up newegg.com for a replacement.
Should be able to get it all fixed up for less than $50

I let it sit for about 2 hours. I turned it on and left it alone. It eventually booted. I made sure all of my files are backed up and am doing my school work from a thumb drive for now.

I'm not sure I want to bother throwing a HDD at it when it could be a failing MOBO or processor or something that is not able to boot when it's warm. I'm going to see if I can transition into using my Wife's Mac so she can have a new computer instead of me. Not sure how I feel about the switch to a Mac...

I had a dv6000 and the mother boards can have the solder reflowed and be good as new. It is a common problem with the dvseries. The true problem was most likely it overheating the crap solder and eventually caused your issue. I had my mobo reflowed and shipped for less than a hundo....sold it later bc I fawked the screen. Also they set the BIOS to run the cooling fan at max. I remember I sent it to Florida to have it done and it was sooo cheap.

That was a common problem when manufacturers went to lead-free solder in the mid 2000's. It took a while to get the formula and process down to where the new solder would hold up to repeated heat cycles and vibration.
This exact same problem was behind the XBox 360 red ring of death. The ball grid array connection to the video chip would develop cracked connections. An often advocated fix was to wrap the console in towels and turn it on for a while. This would overheat the system and in effect reflow the solder.

However, I doubt at a bad solder connection would be responsible for a HDD failure as pictured here.
