Lamey cylinder

I was just wondering how many people had the same trouble as me.Last year at the event in MI. The sleeves in my lamey cyl. dropped down in the bore .014" because they were not installed properly. It was the first ride with that cyl.

I have a few of them, but have not had any problems with the sleeves dropping in any of them. From what I hear the problem was on the cylinders from Dan with sleeves installed. I have been doing my own boring and sleeving.

Where did you get yours from?

If the cyl. is overheated the sleeves can drop right ?

The sleeves should never drop now matter how hot they get .These just were not seated all the way down so they did drop when the motor got warm

Mine was complete from Dan

Tricky what do you have a boring machine or a mill

Last year I sent Tricky a picture of a LAMEY cyl that I got direct from him in the end of 2004. The cylinder had a sleeve dropped even before I tested it. We noticed that after start engine for the first time and so in the moment that we were tighting the spark plugs on it.

And the most increadible thing was the customer service from him. TERRIBLE.

After U have it running for a couple days well I will doubt it will have a sleeve drop.... it is a sleeve seat problem that won´t take too much time to show up.

I ran a 1st gen non-PV cylinder for abour 5 tanks last year with no trouble. That was one that Paul had resleaved after smitty finnaly succeded in destroying it (it took him 4 top end seizures to do it!). Now I'm running a 3rd gen casting (PV cylinder with no PV's machined in it). I've only got about 30 minutes on it so far, but everything is looking good.

From what I understand, there is a lip at the top of the sleave that 'should' seat firmly against the casting. In fact, the shelf is machined out of the casting to fit the sleeve. I think the problem happens when the sleeves aren't pressed in all the way, then every thing is machined and ported, and they fall down when they engine reaches opperating temperature.
Paul would probably have the most insight on this.

Geek is correct in there is a shelf for the flange of the sleeve to rest on.
the problem happens upon cooling after the sleeves are installed.
If the cyl is't put in a press to hold the sleeves in position, the sleeve will lift during the cooling process. once the cyl is decked to size afterwards, a drop is imminent. I have learned this the hard way & I finaly made a fixture to prevent it from happening. This isn't a problem only with Lamey cyls. I have had it happen with bone stock oem cyls also.
Live & learn, it's how we get better at what we do.

The master has spoken!
AND the master has solved the problem!! :arms:

That's good to know Paul - I always wondered what caused it.

Yeah as Paul said we learn as we go but i hate always learning the hard way. Some people do what they call a cold press ,as the cylinder cools and pushes the sleeve up and the assembly drops to a predetermined temp.you need to press it back down.
Lamey was doing it.I guess mine was one of few lucky ones that had the wrong shrink fit or just missed the cold press.
I hope they now check hieghts to make sure they stay down
Although he did eventually fix it.I am still out a set of reeds and one set of rings and a lot of ****ing around and my port hiehts are now different from what Paul originally set them at and I have to use a thicker base gasket.
Hope it runs good for the summer, just waiting for some warmer water to break it in

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND TIME YOU SPENT ON THE PHONE PAUL (MAGOOS)
