Harmless my ass. That is a tornado. Actually called a waterspout because it is on water instead of land. Faaaaar from harmless.

We had a tornado come through our neighborhood in 2008. My son was four then and became obsessed with tornados. We have tons of books/movies/documentaries/tv shows/etc. He claims he is going to be a tornado chaser.

I live in Texas 70 miles from the coast and I've also spent time in Kansas and Oklahoma (AKA tornado alley). Like McDog said, that is a waterspout. Maybe they are smaller up there on Erie but DAMN far from harmless. Maybe what you are talking about being harmless is what we here call devil winds or wirlwinds. In the summer the rising heat makes a swirling wind that actually travels like a tornado would, but it is harmless because it doesn't have much strength. The amount of waterspray at the base of the one in the picture shows it has enough strength to do harm.

agreed, I wasnt here next to lake erie luckilly but a water spout smashed into shore about 4 years ago and the people that were here said all the water smashed down and when i came home all my furniture etc was a block away. I hear its rare for them to reach shore. Lots of mangled aluminum etc that day in a very small area

Oh man I never thought of that! All the water probably came down in a massive column and just douched everything!

It doesn't look like he actually goes through it. That's a small boat to be messing around a twister in. Cool POV, but that dude is just plain nuts!
