A successful sub
sub-bullethole.jpg

I'll start with something easy, this is one of the 1st few tricks you will try when you 1st start freestyle.

To pull this trick off successfully:
Start out by going straight at medium throttle to get just above plaining speed. Once the ski is plained you need to hop the ski twice. The first hop you are trying to unweight the ski and prepare for the 2ed hop. The 2ed hop you are trying to get as high as possible.

When you hit the water landing the 1st hop have your knees slightly bent and mash the gas. Once you leave the water on the 2ed hop you need to bring your knees as close to your body as possible in a squatting position. (but dont bring your body to squat in the tray, bring the back of the tray to touch your auss) Once you have the back the ski out of the water and your knees towards your chest, you wont to firmly push the handle pole forward and slightly down. The idea here is to pre-angle the nose of the ski to go down into the water. Once you enter the water stay squatted/ducked lightly pulling the throttle to about a quarter open. This allows you to pull through and ride out the sub.

This is the approch angle you need to take when going in... notice the pooping squat

Tips

#1) You don’t need to be going fast when trying this trick.
#2) You don’t need to get the ski perpendicular to enter the water, a slight shallow angle is desired
#3) A good hoodseal is your friend, allong with outwares, bilge pumps and hoodstraps.

Ride along maybe 1/4 throttle, a little more if your ski isn't so strong, do a bounce to get in the air, while in the air, pull the tray up with your feet (lifters, footholds, or nothing) and push the handlepole forward to get the ski at a good angle to enter the water.

When the nose hits, nail the gas so the ski will pull itself under.

Keep your head down and make sure you're crouched so the water doesn't rip you off the ski.

Once under, depending on how deep you're going, let off the gas to get the nose to come back up, then give it a blip to pop up and drive out. Sometimes I have to blip it once to level the ski off underwater, then again to pop up. Having a good hood helps with underwater power.

If you get fairly deep, you can also turn the bars to do a 180 while under.

In this pic, you can see I have pulled the tray up pretty far, my toes are still hooked into the footholds, my arms are extended after pushing the nose down, and I'm probably pulling the throttle right then.

No, you can accomplish this trick without straps or holds. Pushing out with your feet to the sides of the tray is sufficient.

Yup, my right foot cramps up bad due to this! Footholds this winter for sure.

With d-cut rideplate or factory ride plate I've found it harder to pull-up the rear than with a slightly longer one just because the nose comes up a lot more with the shorter ride plates and require a lot more lifting in the rear, esp. harder w/out footholds.

ever since i have had a d cut ride plate i have had a hard time pulling up the rear of the ski. is there a different way to do it when you have the d-cut ride plate.

thanks sean

Ah, I really don't know, I just do it. Based on the spray when I enter, I'd say I have the bars straight at first then turn them.

I'll have to pay more attention next time I do to see what I do.

i think im starting to get it but im worried i need a bilge does anyone have one? should i get automatic what do you guys have?

You need a bilge pump !!! You can purchase the Rule 500 bulge from local marine store. Enclosed is Overtons. You need; the bilge pump (and glue to install to the bottom of your engine compartment, I use 5200, works well) and a Thru Hull Fitting. Some clear hose and maybe a couple elbows (from the local hardware store), and a plastic on/off switch (I purchased from Murrays Discount Auto). I have a 750sxi/pro, mounted the switch on the 3 screw plastic cover just forward of the handle bars, on the small surface which is angled on aprox a 45' angle (on right side). I can flip it easily with my left hand and it's tucked away nicely, so I don't hit it.

i do them without a bildge all the time, on the sxr if you just ride for like a few minutes the majority of the water will come out of the plug's 1 way valve
