Is this right to do to a customer

I just bought some stuff from a very respected Jet ski company that prefers to take paypal. I have spent a good amount of my money with them on stuff. This past order they wanted to charge me 30 dollars to use paypal which they prefer. I agreed because I really like there products but the more I think about it the more it pisses me off. I pay them instantly and I have to pay more because of paying the way they want me to. Do I have a right to be pissed or am I just nuts?

id see it as the money making aspect of a business. Not the " hope to do business again" part. Why not offer an alternate parment method to save everyone money?

If they prefer paypal then yeah thats kinda messed up that they charge you extra for it. For my business I only take credit cards if its absolutely necesary, and when I do I charge an extra 3% give or take depending on the type of card it is. On a 20k dolalr purchase, there is no way im eating that loss because the credit company will take it from me and also make 5 times that on the person using the card. They get you from every angle.

If that is the way they "prefer" to be paid than I wouldn't expect to pay the added costs of paypal...they should factor it in to there costs as operating expenses. If it is your preferred payment methos than I would say its fair, but if there is no other option thats not right. Personally I would be upset.

Does any of you run a business?? If so help me out here, if not here is the deal....... you have a retail store, you sell parts and take payment by credit card, VISA, Mastercard etc etc all charges you a percentage (thinking around 5-10 percent), with that being the case you have 2 options.

1. you factor in that loss into your price structure. Say you have a item that would normally sell for 100.00, you adjust the price to say 105.00-110.00 to make up for that percentage that the CC companies are going to charge you for doing business using plastic.

2. you do not factor in those percentages and you just take a loss with every sale... most businesses factor it in........


then you have the smaller businesses who do more internet, phone orders where they take cash check, money order or Paypal......... do you know how much payal charges?? about 3%. and the buyer still has some protection like you would using regular credit cards. so, for a shop to request paypal fees is not unheard of, they are doing you a favor...

fyi, when I sell something, I ask for 3% if u use paypal.

I understand exactly what you are saying. I also know that of all the CC companies out there American Express is the highest at around 3% and visa/master card generally run around 1.5-2% depending on the amount off business that is done and the plan you have.

If i'm way off base so be it, add it to the price.

The last one I set up American Ex was the highest but now that I think about it we didn't add discover to it. You are right Ron.

at least on my current account discover is higher, i wont accept either so its a moot point for me lol. but like I said if I preferred credit card transactions then no, i absolutely would not charge more for it.

thats also why i use financing now lol but they still give the same hit as cc

If you have a regular account for paypal, there is 0% service charge if someone transfers existing $$ inpaypal to you. You only get charged a % if they use a card to pay an invoice?

In all my ebay, paypal transactions, I don't remember them taking a cut on a regular basis.

I was thinking: if you guys want to avoid all those CC charges, you can always send a MO.

Yes Discover is the highest. When I worked for a company a few years ago I believe discover took 4-5%. It could be higher now. Visa and Mastercard were the cheapest by taking 3%. We didn't take Discover card or American express.

All businesses factor it in, but they do not make it so blatantly obvious. Some charge a 20 dollar shipping fee no matter what you buy and some factor it into their prices. The business should have done it more discreetly.

I could see them charging the cust for the paypal fees. But you would have to be spending alot for their paypal fees to be $30!
I think paypal may charge less of a fee if you use payment type service instead of product.
The places I buy from either already have my CC # on file or will just go ahead & mail the part and I mail them a Money order at the same time. That's trust
