Is my handle pole screwed?

a limiting strap might buy you some time if it is cracked.

Good point, that may be an inexpensive way to keep riding while I save for a pole. I have not lost the ski in the surf or had the pole gut pushed up close to the limit.

a beefit kit is basically a small metal plate that rivets to the outside of the pole, with a hole through it for the pivot bolt to pass through. it prevents stress from damaging the pole in that area. they go on both sides of the pole. I guess you could cut a 1/16" plate of stainless, drill holes in it, then put it up to the pole use it for a pattern to drill holes all the way through the fiberglass and through the alloy, then bolt it through. but then you've weakened the top area where the top of the plate is.

Thanks for the description, I think I may be too late for one of these unless I bond it in place with epoxy and reinforce the crap out of it. I may take the pole out and have a better look at it. maybe some stainless plates and bolts could make it last a little longer. Seems like I may be spending riding time fixing something that is just going to break anyway. Anyone know how thick the fiberglass on a SXR pole is?

I like Bill's pole and the price is right, is anyone else running it?

well, because they don't think you're going to put enough stress on that area to break them. depending on what year model your ski is, the factory designers have only for the past few years gotten the idea that we try to intentionally break this stuff. back in the day, aftermarket companies started poppin' up all over the place because stuff needed to be made differently to accommodate extreme riding conditions, most of those company owners were modifying them in their garages before they ever made companies out of the stuff they were making. it takes awhile for companies like yamaha and kawasaki, etc.. to be able to change their production formats based on feedback, because they have to finish off making however many units they've set out to make before they can go back and redesign something for a new run of product. I know something as simple as a handlepole brace seems trivial, but it's a big deal to them, for various reasons.

I cracked my polein the same spot and is what i did was bought a little sheet of stainless, formed and cut it to fit from the topside of the pole all the way around the bottom, going past the cracked spot and back up to where the bottom of the pole was wider again.
When it was all formed I siliconed, (it was all I had) and screwed it to the pole.
I rode that way for over a month until I saved the money and received my new AC pole.
Sorry I dont have any pictures...
