I broke my pump shoe and dinged up the prop, how bad does this look?

Well I'm pretty sure I got gravel in the intake from pulling my 92 SN out of the water and onto a sandy beach all week at the lake house. I did a search and saw how to take pictures of the gap around the prop from the back of the pump. How bad does this look? I know the pump shoe will have to be replaced, how do I do that? Do I need to replace anything else? I saw something about midshaft couplers when I was searching. Is that something that I need to check? Whatever is wrong, the engine seems to rev just fine but the ski won't even go fast enough for me to stand up on it. Is this all because of a broken pump shoe or is there more damage that I'm not seeing?

I'm a pretty competent mechanic but I'm new to stand ups so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Will it still work if I just replace the shoe and keep using the prop? I'd really rather not spend $300 on a new prop if I can avoid it

I would recommend going with an aluminium pump shoe as they are obviously more tolerant of even minor dings that can damage the stocker.

That impeller could possibly be reconditioned. Firms such as Impros will weld up the blades and then machine them back. Usually works out cheaper than buying brand new. Only problem is turnaround may be a bit longer at this time of year as everyone is riding and damaging stuff at the same time.

Hard to tell what state the impeller housing is in. You need to measure the diameter to determine if it is still in spec. There's also the possibility of it being out of round due to corrosion or impact damage.

I'm a self-confessed hoarder and opportunist so I have a stash of good spares that I picked up for a song. When we hit trouble I'm usually able to 'ski's up and running quickly and with little cost. Not everyone's idea of going about things but it works for me!

And what about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure? I'm completely over running 'ski's up beaches and such. These days it totes, stands, lifting 'ski's out of the water and not operating in shallows (especially rocky or debris-laden shallows). I'm an older guy and ride with other older guys. We hardly ever suffer random damage these days because we operate in a more cautious, sympathetic and smarter fashion (and believe me, this is in stark contrast to my younger days
o_O).

Ok, I can definitely spend a bit more for an aluminum shoe. I've read that some of them require a lot of work to fit and I just want to be able to put one on and go. I've read that the Worx one doesn't require any additional work, is that true?

Also, if I need to get a new prop which would you guys recommend for a stock 701 single carb? I've read a lot about the scat trak 12/17 but I'm not sure how the pitch affects the performance. I also heard you need a special tool to take off the prop, is that expensive?

I have some props

What kind?

Hooker 9/15 or a Skat Freeride Swirl 12/15 or 12/17

Yeah I've heard good things about those. How much of a difference will they make over the stock one?

Also, why exactly is my prop no good? I understand that the nicks along the leading edges may cause it to cavitate a bit but will it really not work at all? Just curious.

BTW I really appreciate all the replies guys, I'm trying to learn all of this as quickly as I can

I recommend buying a used 08+ OEM super jet prop. It's a direct swap (at least it was on my 99).

They are usually around $100-120, and are a huge upgrade over the old aluminum prop. I'm very pleased.

Get a new plastic OEM shoe, and a used OEM stainless prop.

I have a stocker, a wave runner prop and a skat not sure in pitch

I'd be interested in that skat if you could find out what pitch it is. From what I have read a 12/15 or 12/17 is the most that my 61x could handle

I have a stock plastic shoe that is in good shape I can sell you for $20 plus shipping if you want

Man I really appreciate that, I may wind up going with that route. I wanted an aluminum one but it looks like they require a lot of work to get to fit. How long does it usually take to ship from Canada to Georgia?

If Canada shipping won't work, the OEM duct is $76 +shipping, P/N 6R7-51311-00-00.
Looks like here is one for $79 shipped. http://www.ebay.com/itm/272581471833

I imagine if you post in the wanted section someone will have one for a little less.

Seems like aluminum is not required, if the plastic one will only break from hitting a rock. I would be concerned if the aluminum just makes something else gets damaged instead of being the weakest link, but I don't know enough about them to answer that.

Cool man thanks for the link. I think I may wind up going with a stock one. I can't seem to find a clear answer as to which aluminum ones fit out of the box. I think the Worx racing one is a direct fit but I'm not sure, people seem to have differing opinions on that

So I pulled the pump out today and this prop is definitely trashed. The blades are all pitted from cavitation and there is a crack on one of the trailing edges. I definitely need a new prop. How bad does this wear ring look? It looks pretty scored to me but I measured the clearance between the impeller and the ring to be about .020. Some areas are a little wider, maybe .025. How bad is that? Also, there was a rock jammed in the water inlet line going to the engine. I was worried that it may have overheated but I did a compression test and it has 155psi on both cylinders so I guess I got away without doing too much damage.

Do you guys think a new prop and pump shoe will be enough to get me back on the water? The last pic is where I am assuming the pump shoe bolts on. There was only 1 screw left so I guess I'll have to find some more. Is this where you put the 5200 sealant? Because it doesn't look like there was any on it before...

Hey man, I have been gone on vacation and not I'm away again for a family funeral. Once I'm back home I'll try to get on here and if you want to buy that stock pump shoe I'll sell you it and ship. I can't see it being much over a week for shipping from Canada.

while you have it apart make sure the pump stator veins look ok. if rocks went thru they may have gotten beat up and honestly that prop doesnt look bad enough to keep the ski from getting on plane....so thats why im wondering about the stator section
