today i redid one side of my turf because it started to fall off. i sanded it really really well, almost down to bare white, 2 layers of contact cement on sheet and ski and she still didnt stick that good. i got it on though and i put some black weatherstrip adhesive along the top maybe that will keep whatever gets in there out and my turf on the rails..
either your glue is old(or not red can dap weldwood) or your not letting the glue dry all the way before sticking. you should never need two layers one is plenty.

did you get the green can or the red can of weldwood? the green can does not work!!! use the red can only!!!!:buttkick:

Just to be sure, you're talking about the bondline going around the ski, right?

I did mine with 1 piece around the nose, then 2 pieces on each side.

When people mention doing the 'sides with one piece', that normally means the sides of the tray area and getting all the way inside the footholds with one piece like freestylegeek's ski in Ski Buildups.

Thats how I did my sq along with one another one I did. Looks much nicer than turfing the foothold pocket with a seperate piece

i disagree.

maybe your one layer is super thin then? having two doesnt add anything you cant get with one.

ive turfed a LOT of skis. generally the ski, itself, only needs one coat, but depending on temp, humidity, sunlight factor, heat gun usage, wait time (all evaporation related), the turf can most certainly use 2 coats. sometimes 3.

lol its definatly the red can. ive heard two coats so after me one coated turf fell off i tried 2 and one is definatly better.

You're not waiting nearly long enough.
The glue must be COMPLETELY dry before you slap the turf on there. Once you think it's dry, have another beer.
After that, it may be dry enough.

i've turfed quite a few and Eric-the heat gun speeds the drying as well as making the turf more pliable.

I do 2 coats, waiting or drying each coat. and my cuts are good enough I don't usually need or have space for sealant. but it can hide newb errors and definitely can't hurt.

15 minutes is not long enough.
15 minutes is how long you wait after you finished your 2nd beer after you think it's dry.

you named your heat gun "eric"?

thats ridiculous!

ive never seen a heat gun that didnt look like a penelope or a ruth.

HA!

I only use one coat of glue. Never had an issue, even on rails. If applied evenly, I don't see why 2 layers would be better. It is not twice as sticky. The second layer would mearly cover the first.
Please explain why 2 layers are better.... I never have issues with one. Apply evenly and let dry properly=no issues.

again, two layers on the turf CAN be better (not always, necessarily) depending on the heat and humidity.

ever notice that when you apply the cement to the ski, then to the turf, that the turf is dry in about half the time it takes for the ski to dry? its not always the case, but sometimes it is. well, before the turf cement dries too much as youre waiting for the ski cement to dry, its a good idea to add a second layer. youre not covering up the first layer. youre 'revitalizing' it (making it wet again) by applying the second coat.

thats my theory and im sticking (no pun in ten did) to it!

that means youre not waiting long enough for it to DRY

you know, I think we need to reformulate the turfing process for those that are under 21

the "drink a beer" rule after each step IS a scientific process.....if you cant drink beer while you turf then all the rules are out the window!

:friday::bump:

I like 2 coats as well as the DAP likes to soak into the turf it seems.......I guess all this depends on application as well..

youre right idok.

drink 3 capri-suns and have 2 grandmas cookies, after each coat, for those that are under 21.

good call!
