How do you test the CDI unit?

I have a '86 550 that doesn't want to fire. The stator tests ok.

There is one test where you check the ohms between the two spark plug wires but it even says that test does not tell for sure if its good or bad. If your stator checks good and the magnets in the flywheel seem good I would just get the CDI

Does it have spark and what is your compression

No spark and 190ish compression.

You said you checked your stator and it was good. As long as your flywheel is in good shape I would go ahead and replace the cdi

i need to test a stator for someone.. what two wires do i need to test in order to get the reading that etlls me if the charging coil is good or bad?

This should be in a different thread, but I'll help you anyways. :smile:

There should be 4 wires coming out of the stator. If you have low resistance across 2 different sets of wires, your stator is probably good. You'll have to wait till I get home to find out specifically which wires. :wink:

An easy way to be absolutely sure is to start the ski and, using an analog volt meter, look for an AC voltage at the regulator.
