pull the motor it makes it much easier. once the motor is out then you can loosen the bed plate bolts and remove it then you don't have to take your exhaust manifold off. i have done this a couple times. there are four bolts that hold the bed plate and eight i believe that hold the case together on each side. you only loosen the four for the bed plate then retighten. with the carb and exhause still on the engne sits pretty level upside down.

you have to take off

remove battery
throttle cable
fuel lines
unplug ebox from start stop switch
loosen exhaust hose from exhaust
remove the four bolts from the dash that hold the ebox and sit it on the engine
remove coupler cover
take out motor mount bolts ( the ones that hold the bed plate to the mount)
as you loosen the motor bolts you can lift the engine and pull the shims out, mark them as to which corner the shims came from so they go back to the correct mount. this will keep your engine lined up.
at this point you should be able to lift the motor out, ebox and all.

good luck

That's what I'm thinking.

You can pull the gas tank out to give you more room but why the pipe ??

I took it from his title that he was removing the starter and bendix.
I figured that's what he meant since he was pulling the pipe.
Maybe he'll clarify.

I thought you were changing the bendix? Why do yout have to take the pipe off?

I just bought this ski yesterday (in Michigan).
It will not start or turn the engine over, the starter only spins without engaging the flywheel. I have a brand new battery on it.
I was trying to pull the pipe off in order to get under it to remove the starter motor, just thought it would be easier to get at.
After reading several threads on the subject, I removed the flywheel cover to have a look at the bendix.
It is loose and moves from side to side a bit, I can pull it out so the gears line up with the flywheel and it stays there, isn't it supposed to spring back in?

Uh............ it moves side to side and in and out because you have the cover off. The cover supports the bendix with a little bushing in the cover. I'd try spraying it with some corrosion block and trying to make it engage by hand and then maybe it will start catching on it's own.

Can you make the bendix engage by hand? It probably just needs to be free'd up and oiled. Reach in there and hold the body of it with one hand, and twist the geared part with your other hand

Pull the motor, pull the FW (needed to get bendix out), then either soak the bendix in ATF or get a nice used one, $50 shipped is the standard price. Then get back on the water!

I forgot!
its sucks when the bendix is stuck and won't engage the flywheel cause you can't ride. it sucks even more when your bendix gets stuck engaged to the flywheel and spins your starter at 7000+ rpms until it is frucked as well as the bendix letting loose and trashing your flywheel and stator. same result, can't ride but much more expensive

im doin the exact same thing right now on my 99. i got HEAPS of issues im freakin out.
my bendix was stuck and feels worn out, i need a new topend and hone, and my crank bearings feel HORRIBLE, the brass insert behind the bendix is broken, my starter may be bad.

SBT has a bendix at $99 vs RIVA at $239.
