how much weight will refoam save you?

say you had a rediculously waterlogged ski. not water in the ski, but waterlogged foam (sort of a difference). but how much would you save in weight by refoaming it? im already a light weight rider as is...140ish

if not im going to spend the money on other parts.

I've heard guys say they have saved 20-30 pounds...thats quite a bit if you ask me. I think it would be worth doing, and if you have your footholds cut its a great time to do it. When I did mine it really wasn't that bad, took a bit of time and was messy but all in all wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

The real question to answer is what density is the stock foam???? I've heard some pople say 2, some people say 6. If it's 2 and you put in 4, you just added 6-8 pounds to your hull.

it just depends on how much water is in there.

like stated above 8.6 lbs per gallon, you could easily have a gallon in there, with all of the voids in the factory foam...

It will be stronger, and PROBABLY lighter with newer foam.

you make a good point though, people crack me up with lightwight parts, and carbon fiber stuff for weight savings, and then they weigh 230..

skip a few a cheesburgers and put that $$$ towards booze and fuel... hahaha

that seems to be the easiest place to save some weight.... ( the belly)

i cant ever seeing a gallon of water soked in to the foam l,maybe a cup. i took the old foot holds and part of my tray out because i thought it was wasterlogged, it was holding water between two layers of the foam, it never soked in, all the way down to the bottom was dry foam.

Hahaha, a cup....look at my picture, theres maybe ten cups there and all i did was pop off one piece. You can see where I moved the water with my hand in the picture, you can't tell but all that it is in there is standing water. I don't think that shaving 20 pounds from re-foaming is a wild number.

LOL... Thats crazy, ha ha. 6-8 lbs?:haha: I weighed my bare hull at 114. I weighed an idenical hull at 107. Thats 7 right there. The weight of mine now with no foam is 89lbs. If it was only 6-8 lbs, i never would have done it.

I just went through defoaming/refoaming on my roundnose. The foam held maybe one gallon, if that much.
I refoamed with 3lb density foam, which was plenty strong enough. Denser than the factory stuff, it seemed.

I weighed the hull after I was done. Bare hull, reinforced heavily, front, back, refoamed, 120lbs. Not that good, but strong.

of the 3 bare hull( no hard ware what so ever) i wieghed they all wieghed 114 to 118 lbs, i know for a fact the one i tore down was dry as a bone, i think if you got a 1/2 gallon out of one that would be a lot. foam may seem completly drenched but the volume is deciving.

I'm just restating what I thought I heard Jr.Magoo say on the old board. I think he's correct for a roundnose, a roundnose doesn't have an air void between the top and bottom foam halves like the Squarenoses do. And I don't think the foam itself would hold more than a gallon.

So anyway, if your ski is "average" and it's wet and you refoam with 4 lb foam, it doesn't appear that you'll save any weight over stock.

stopped by the devil (west marine) the other day to get foam, all they had was 2lb and the kit was 99 dollars :bigeyes: so i contacted us composites 4 times the foam and 1/2 the cost.:arms:

But some performance boat builders will fill voids with ping-pong balls for floatation. 1/10th the weight of foam.

you can order bags of ping-pong balls cheap, somewhare.

no, thats the weight including the peices that i cut out. That is a very fair weight. I'm still undecided on which foam i'm goint to use. Needless to say, if i do use 8lb foam, I have sacrificed some weight for strength. Thats a good trade if you ask me. Mile, you going to lainer this year? Hows the Project comin, haven't talked to you in a while, I lost you cell number again, so i'll have to call the house


The 2000 hull that i weighed at 107 has some water in it as well, i drilled to holes in the bottom of the chines and stood the boat up straight, and had some puddles of water on the floor. Thats when i decided to cut mine up. There was a 7 lb difference between the two before i started, and that right there is close to a gallon.
