How do I "de-stink" a wet suit?

as some of you know.... I just got a (looks like) never used slippery wet suit and pull over vest. it's absolutely perfect except for one thing.... The previous owner must have smoked like a chimney where this thing was stored cuz it smells like a dirty ashtray. I have tryed washing it, fabreze, and soaking it in a baking soda solution. all to know avail. being a non-smoker I may be overly sensative to the smell... but it burns my nose, it's so bad. some of the white areas are even discolored yellow from the tar/nicotene.

any sugestions to remove the odor and maybe even the stains?

my wife washes my wetsuit, gloves, boot inserts rash guards and tour coat about once a month. she puts it in the washing machine on the delicate cycle with a little detergent and some oxy-clean. comes out nice and clean and no problems.

of course, we do not smoke though...

It's a wetsuit, let it stink, who cares? :wiggle:

Seriously though, just hang it outside for a day.

You may want to contact a company like ServPro that do fire and smoke restoration for homes. They may sell a product or even have some home remedy advice that would work on your suit.

Or, sell it to a smoker and buy a different one. :439:

I've got a recipe that takes out skunk smell, I expect it would probably take out smoke smell.

Mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid soap (any dish soap or non-lotion hand soap). Apply to dog (wet suit) and massage into coat (wet suit). Rinse well. I would probably leave this soak for a while on the wet suit (in a bucket or the tub), then massage it in again. This should be used right away, don't bother using it later.

It could bleach out some of the color, but it should take out the yellow from the nicotine. It does a good job taking out the yellow stain that white dogs get from a direct skunk hit.

Good luck!

This one should take care of it: premix gas and oil at 40:1. Pour on the suit. Light a match...

so far I've tried (solo and in combinations)
  1. Laundry detergent (NG)
  2. Amonia (NG)
  3. Vinager (NG)
  4. Borax (NG)
  5. fabreez (NG)
  6. Zep deoderizer (NG)
Just when I think I finally got the smell gone, as soon as it dries it's back, but it is getting less noxious.

to the ppl saying hang it out side... you know it's below freezing and snowing here...right?
