Hood Latch. OEM or Aftermarket??? (RRP)

How do the full RRP hood latch mechanisms compare to the OEM Yamaha latches?

Is the RRP hood latch more reliable than the OEM latches?

Has anyone had any problems with the RRP latch mechanism?

They do sell the adjustable latch section, it works good and gives additional adjustment. Thrust makes one too in more colors.. Worked to help get proper hood adjustment on buddies XFR, I liked it.. bought a thrust myself due to color option..

As for the main part of the latch, The OEM has looser tolerances than the RRP. The RRP is a work of art with an Art Price! Both work, But honestly, if you have the OEM, Use the OEM with the RRP or Thrust Latch assembly added.

Thanks for the input guys. I do have a fully functional OEM latch but i'm trying to limit how much I take from the SJ. Plus, It sounds like the full RRP latch is actually an improvement over the OEM, which was my main concern. I also have a weakness for anodized aluminum parts, so I'm probably gna get one. lol

I have broken 5 OEM hood latches, RRP is still going strong. Worth the money IMO. Losing a hood is a good way to lose a boat. Cheap insurance.

Have never broke an oem mechanism, but definitely bent them up! Cast oem latch break all the time.
Oem mechanisms work fine, but as stated above, have sloppy clearances. The full RRP latch assm is a very nice part, but pricy @ $200.

The top bit is what breaks for me every time. Shears in half on one side or the other. I kept the OEM bit that mounts to hull, just replaced the OEM latch itself with RRP. Seems to be a rock solid combo and way cheaper. $75 from @JetManiac iirc.

Edit - Seeing the pictures above, the LATCH is what breaks for me, although i have had to bend in the locking bar on the mechanism so it would stay locked during hard impacts. Breaking so many latches was a combination of my hood being loose due to older hood seal / worn out xscream hood hook and eating poop on 10' high roll attempts. Lot of side impacts and flexing in hull. RRP let me adjust so hood is tight now, and I land most my rolls now lol.

OEM hood side latch top piece should be replaced with the stronger RRP billet adjustable piece.

If you want extra protection especially for surf riding, add secondary hood straps or much better install ratcheting hood straps.

OEM SJ front hood prongs and hull side hooks are another problem, both are easy to bend and loose a hood as well.

I see xscream makes a stainless steel latch, I kinda like the idea of the steel, but of course it's even more pricey than the rrp.

Does the little thing on "the other side" that the latch grabs onto break much?

I have never broken that part, just the latch and once the mechanism.

But the XS is not adjustable and the ones we installed did not fit that well. Never seen the latch receiver break.

I have an x- metal SS latch also used. Some slight grinding done on hook , im guessing for better fit in keeper?
