hin title question

I don't see how Flat Braps link will work for this situation. Tbaer says he DOESN'T have a HIN. The link instructions ask for a HIN. It seems this service tracks down lost paper work not create missing HIN #'s. But then again it's based in Vegas so who knows.

Yeah i wasn't paying much attention to his original post, but if the vehicle had some sort of VIN the website i gave is a great alternative to legally receiving a title.

yeah is doesn't have a HIN or title. So my question is can i build a custom ski using the hull (maybe top deck conversion) and get a title for a "homebuilt" ski?

Man you're getting flamed for trying to do something legit. Why is it that everyone who buys a carbon hull and wants a title is treated like royalty but someone who buys a used stripped out hull to build over the winter and wants a title is a scammer or a thief? :261: Not all of us are made out of gold.

BTW - You didn't do anything illegal by buying something without a title or HIN. The guy who sold it to you would be the one doing something illegal. The problem is, if someone claims that hull stolen and that guy tips the police off that you have it, a bill of sale means nothing and you could be out a few hundred dollars when they confiscate the hull but that's about as far as the penalty on your end goes.

He is not getting flamed, referring to the fact that some people will post "Want to by a HIN Plate" for a ski. This is illegal. That is where the Flames come from.

There are only 2 things that we moderate in the for sale / wanted sections.

1. Post dumping
2. Looking for a HIN Plate. This is illegal, so we lock and or delete. usually delete.

Right on BK. That was exactly my point. In the legal aspect ONLY a state certified repair facility is allowed to remove the numbers from any vehicle. If said facility replaces your old hull with a WDK hull, you have paperwork that makes it legit. The old hull is considdered scrap. After that you would need to apply for an assembled title, and prove where every part on the ski came from with reciepts.

I applied for the assemble title when I built my aftermarket hull. It was an easy process, because everything was 100% legit with paperwork.

Your hull has no proven history, since someone has removed the identification. You could run into a problem, or the DMV might not want to waste their time. Just keep paperwork for everything you buy to build it. Trying the legal way is much cheaper than buying a title illegally for $300. ( That's title jumping, which is closely tied to theft. A serious offence if caught)

I hope this clears things up a little.

If you can get homebuilt skis titled, why in the hell don't hullmakers title their hulls?

i just called the sc DNR (that is where we title our skis in SC) they said that as long as you send them pics of the build and you follow the coast guard guidlines you can title any self built watercraft. All they need is pics of the build and finished product with you standing next to it and they will issue you a HIN, title a reg numbers for 40 bucks. She said people do it alot in SC.

A hull alone cannot be titled. It must be a complete running boat in order to have your application approved.

Many hull builders don't sell turn key boats, so they are unable to title them. WCF builds conplete running skis, so he could obtain a title prior to selling it, or supply the reciepts needed to the buyer.

Sounds like the best plan.
