Here is a tough one for you guys !

I have been fighting a problem that has cost me way too much money yet it persists not to go away. I have 2006 Superjet with MSD enhancer, TBM flywheel, factory pipe with mod chamber, 84mm cylinders ported by Paul, SBN 44mm carbs, and some other goodies.

I have been getting random free spinning from the starter/bendix or in other words does not engage the the flywheel when hitting the starter button. I have replaced everything there is to change but the freaken thing keeps doing it.

Things that has been changed so far (to OEM brand new)
- Bendix with new washers and spring (installed as per the manual)
- Flywheel cover
- Battery
- Starter motor
- Starter relay
- All power and ground wires (the 4 gauge ones, that go from the battery to the relay and to the starter itself, I have even changed the ground wire going to the starter motor.
- Brand new TBM flywheel (had Jetnetics before that lost several teeth because of the same problem I guess)

As you can see, I have changed everything related to the starter and bendix, but the damn thing still does it, could someone help me please before my TBM flywheel goes to hell as I can see that’s already got some nicks and scratches from the bendix not engaging properly.

What else could it be?? All what I could think of that has not been replaced yet is the damn cause itself  or maybe it's the MSD enhancer, would that cause these types of problems??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ahmed

my ski never used to do that...

the day i put on a TBM flywheel it seems to free spin a lot. i ran it all last season like that with no issues.(pulled the flywheel cover and inspected this winter)

my guess is the aftermarket flywheel causes it for some reason.

Is the keyway good? Is it the right one. Try putting the fly in really hot water to expand it then reinstall to know its on the shaft correctly. Maybe the fly isnt sitting properly? Sounds like u changed everything eles, i wouldnt think it was the msd...Is the starter seated all the way flush. Make sure the starter ear tabs are flush to the case and theres no gap. Some aftermarket starters have 2 o-rings take one off if thats the case and retest to alow it to go all the way in. I had the same issue as u.

its usually the profile of flywheel or bendex teeth they get peened over allow the bendix gear to slip instead of in gauge

Man I've seen so many problems with all the aluminum charging flywheels. You'd think for $500 a piece, quality control would be a little better.

Just to see if if might have a slipping ring gear, use a marker or a bright fingernail polish and draw a line through the ring gear and the flywheel, run ski a day, then pull cover back off and see if the marks are still aligned.

Is the bendix OEM or the brass looking aftermarket thats made in Brazil? I kept having problems with the aftermarket gear now and then and found that some of them were not extending out the full distance.

I have this same problem with my MSD total loss flywheel. Metal shavings all over the inside of the flywheel cover. It's driving me crazy.

I know this may sound a little dangerous, but keep the flywheel cover off and put the tip of your finger on the the bendix tip and hit the start button (make sure you pull the plug caps off first !) visual inspection is the best way to determine the problem

I cut a flywheel cover once (use your old one if you still have it) so that it held the bendix in place so I could turn my motor over. If I remember right I was able to cut it so that 3 bolt holes were left to use to bolt it to the cases.

Weird issue and based on the fact that you replaced every single component with new OEM!!??? Really weird.

I can't imagine a ring gear slipping but that marker idea is great^^^

im going to go with what 24-7 760 SJ said and say try warming the flywheel... maybe it will seat further on and align with the bendix gear better.

my starter has never been pulled from my ski and never skipped until i put the TBM wheel on. i have always just dealt with it since it hasn't caused any damage.

I put a TBM on my 96 SJ and it skipped horribly, it would always catch eventually but it was annoying and I'm sure would eventually leave me stranded. I pulled the flywheel and put it on my 760 and it hasn't skipped a beat since. I'm not sure what the difference is but I have been running it now for over a month and it hits everytime.
