so i'm messin around on the internet earlier today, and i wind up getting a site that pops up and it throws some friggin download onto my notebook. Now, every few minutes i get a virus alert that tells me the system had detected a number of spyware applications etc, click on the icon to download software to solve the problem. Of course the software site is looking for you to buy the software from them. which makes me wonder is there is a virus at all, or just a program that acts like one to make a sale for the company.

anyway, i've tried everything from running sophos to windows live onecare and have even deleted files that i see were from today (4/28/07) but i keep getting the virus alert balloon pop up on my screen.. WTF man.

In my task bar i have a blinking ? icon that blinks between the ? and red circle with a cross line through it.

so, i know there are a few IT guys here... please, what the hell do i need to do??? is this a real visus??? how do i stop this???

I'm running windows XP

ok, i ran MS Defender, RegCure and XoftspySE... i now down to one pop up, that same one I posted last night. I am just going to have my IT department take my notebook and take care of the problem. I'll get a loaner one from them for now. I have been staying completely out of all my normal websites, banking etc just in case. :frown:

Thanks for the help...

Go DL Avast virus remover, by far the best out and its free. My school gives Nortan for free and still prefur this program over anything else.

If you have an IT staff to do this let them do it. This crap can be very nasty nowadays and dig in so deep. Not like viruses (virii?) of the old days that were a quick clean up.

I had a system that I could clean out then it would pass three different spyware scans and a Norton anti-virus scan. After three reboots the deeply hidden evil returned.

Some evil serious engineering going on now that they do crimes and make money with it.

You might want to try Firefox. Not perfect but a lot safer than IE.

IE unsafe for 284 days in 2006:

Just what you need a new link to click on. :)

I am seeing a lot of hidden partitions on hard drives (not the OEM restore partitions either) and those are impossible to get rid of unless you really know what you are doing. Give it to IT.

Also, make sure you uninstall all of these programs you are trying or you will wish you could just go back to the virus. It will KILL your machines performance if you have multiple anti virus/spyware etc. all running at once.

I have to same f'ing icon on my notebook and cant get rid of it..If I run my Norton it doesnt find anything, but stops the stupid pop up window...i have tried all the free spyware programs and non of them get rid of this damn thing....

I dont have an IT dept to goto, anyone got any ideas on how to get rid of this thing....I am not very IT savy so I dont even feel safe trying it if it is in depth.....

If you can find the name of the program running do a google search "how to get rid of XXX" I had that purchase me spyware thingy and done a search and a site led me right to the files. Deleted them and it was gone.
