help replacing the damper/drivershaft coupler

I just bought this 89 650sx. Ran sweet for the first two hours. When i took it out later that night to show my dad...I blew the dampener that was installed between driveshaft and the driveshaft coupler.

I already talked with a bunch of locals on the subject (kalamazoo, MI) and the install seems pretty straight forward. I have no experience with 2cycles but i frequent mx6.com and keep two all-wheel-steering turbo Mazdas on the road as daily drivers. I am downloading the FSM thanks to Aaron!

Anything to look out for in my install? How come this part came free? Just the age of it? I was med. throttle lightly bouncing off the waves when it happened. I was hovering over the stop button when it made a chatter noise; i shut it down super quick after i heard something peculiar. Is there a chance i broke something else? I want to make sure i have all the parts i need ordered monday morning so i don't have to wait any longer to get back on this thing.

Thanks!

It's pretty old and probably got brittle.

I think you can simply unbolt your pump, move it back, put the new dampner in, slide it back in again, and you're good to go.

I think.

I am pretty sure you have to disconnect the whole rear assembly and remove the jet pump and slide the driveshaft out. I already started taking it apart last night. I will post up some pics. Yes, I do believe that old age was the culprit, i just wanted to know if anyone else ever had this happen and if they found something else wrong with their ski. I just got into stand-ups on friday when i bought this ski. So while i am quite mechanical i really don't know how these beasts act.

Ok i took the pump out and slide the driveshaft back enough to get the new part in. It broke the plastic case shroud that protects the coupler. I can't wait till i get my new parts on tuesday.

Where is a cheap place to get hydroturf?

What type of silicon do i use to rebuild the vane pump area

Get Hydroturf from Hydroturf.com. If you want it cheap, I would recommend the B-stock. It's like the B-Pipe, except with turf and no adjustable set screws to worry about.

subtle like a bull in a china shop-:haha: and he didn't get it. even funnier.

I used some clear silicone on mine and Shonuff was right it would have been easier to move the motor. but now you are more familiar with the pump :cheer:

Find out where it comes out in the hull and see where it leads. When you unhooked your pump, did it have a line feeding it?

I got my bachelor's in Applied Biology and bachelor's in Chemistry at FSU.

no dont plug that hole its a drain for your exhaust. When you put the pump back in you have to put silicone all on where the pump shoe area slides into the hull so it won;t cavitate. It really would have been easier to unbolt the motor and slide that forward to change it. check all of your motor mounts to see if theyre broken cause it will break that rubber dampner. Also there is a line in the front of your flywheel cover look down that and line it up with the arrow in the bottom of the hull if its not lined up it can blow that out as well.
