Help me pick one of these skis... (sorry!)

Ok, I think this is a kind of unique twist on the whole "which ski to get" thing, maybe not...I searched but didn't find the comparison I'm looking for.

A girl I know took a ride on an SX-R this summer, and absolutely loved it. Now, she only kneeled around on it (the lake was waaay too choppy, I didn't want her to get frustrated and give up on it) but she hasn't stopped talking about getting one ever since. I want her to grab an 08+ SJ, but she liked how "smooth" the SX-R was. I'm assuming she meant that it felt stable. I've never ridden the 08-up SJ to compare to my '98 SJ or an SX-R....

So, from an absolute beginner's point of view, how would you rank the relative "frustration factor" of learning to ride a stand-up, for these skis:

- 96-07 SJ
- 08-up SJ
- SX-R

By the way, she's like 100 lbs soaking wet. I've got myself convinced she'll ultimately have more fun with us with an 08+ SJ, but I don't want her to get frustrated before she feels confident on it. We ride in Lake Ontario, but have several calm bays to ride in too...a nice mix.

Thanks!

The SXR is going to be a much better ride. The 08 SJ is very squirrely, It likes to ridden very aggressively. At low speeds the nose hunts from side to side and the ski rocks some from side to side.

My pick, the SXR

- 96-07 SJ -
pain in the ass to learn on and you need hundreds of dollars worth of mods to make it "fun" to ride

- 08-up SJ -
personally I hate it, but it is more stable and still need a few hundred in mods to make "fun"

- SX-R -
big heavy and very stable, which equates to kinda boring IMO... It weighs 70lb's more than a sj and is a great race platform if that is your thing

Round nose SJ. it will be a tiny learning curve but if she is not used to any other ski.. it will be a great start.

More fun in the long run..

There is no frustration to the SXR, escpecially at 100 lbs. She should be able to stand in the tray and it will support her at a dead stop, but so will the 08 SJ. I will never regret having one in my fleet. I put all the noobs on it and they preffer it because it is so stable. I ride it quite a bit too but now that I have a RN I can see it sitting alot more.

I really don't think she'd be disappointed either way so if she wants an SXR let her get it. Women make decisions differently than men.

100lbs? She'd be fine with a 550.

Any one of the skis you list can be mastered in two days, as far as just cruising around without constantly falling off. Why not choose a ski that provides the most fun and the most challenge(of the 3 you list). I'd say the 96-07 SJ.

People slay me when they look for the easiest way to do something. The challenge is what adds to the fun.

For a 100lb girl, she won't have trouble with any of those on your list. She could probably stand in the tray with engine off without falling over. Go ahead and do it right and get a superjet. It's probably best to buy a pre 08 unless you can find a super deal to make it worthwhile on an 08

This thread is funny! A guy asking other guys advise about what an appropriate decision for a woman to make that has already made her decision. I think I see who the real Noob is. LOL :spank:

Much to learn about women you have. (in my best Yoda impression)

Ahhhyyyyeeee, The force is strong in you. Ahhhyyyyeeee

I think it depends totally on the personality. If she is a fighter and someone who will be out to conquer it, then totally stick with the superjet. If you think she will get frustrated, then get a SXR.
Personally I would get a SXR for her because there will be less of a learning curve. They can be fun boats especially if she is going to try to ride lake Erie with you guys. After she gets good, let her spend some time on your boat. You can always sell the SXR if she wants a SJ later.

I'm going to agree with this. If she wants the SXR and you convince her to get the SJ then anything that is different or she may think is different is going to come back on you. She may buy a ski just for the color of it and I say let her do it. How does it really effect you anyway. I understand that you are trying to help her make the best decision but is a 100lb girl just starting out really going to care if the SJ is better at freestyle or the SXR is better for racing? Is she going to do either one of those things? I can't speak personally about stability of these choices but but like stated above someone who is 100lbs is going to think the stability of each stand up is pretty much the same. I do think it's great that you got a girl interested in riding a stand up. And since she's already going for the stand up why worry about stability? If she wants something stable buy a couch.

Hey where in Rochester are you from and where do you usually ride out of?

O and btw I would go with the 08 up SJ.

I know, it was a funny question...a guy asking guys about what a woman should get. :) You'd think I'd have learned by now...

The funny thing is, I asked mostly because a) she loved the SX-R but hates the color green (paint = $), and b) I'm hoping to be the guy in her life and I'd much rather wrench on an SJ, since I know my way around those. But, she wants the "smooth" ski so I guess that's it!

Personally, the SX-R feels WAY too heavy to me to be any fun, but I learned on the '93 SN so I'm biased. I cannot get used to jumping the SX-R at all...

E rok Wilbs, me and my 3 buddies usually ride out of Irondequoit bay or Charlotte...you?
