Help me build a Phantom

I just got a full carbon phantom hull RTR minus engine, pump, trim. IMG_3520.jpegI’m completely new to freestyle and just want to make sure I get everything ordered that I need. My donor ski is my 91 SN in need of a resto. IMG_3527.png
The power plant is a 61x with a protec rec head, protec black pipe, protec did port and polish work on the cylinders and the carb has a little work. IIRC its on .5 overbore.

I have list of stuff I need so far, but need some help from the experts as I want to do it all in a few garage sessions. Let me know if I’m missing anything.

Need:
155 Oem pump with SJ driveshaft
7/11 or 7/12 prop
RN mid shaft and housing
Trim setup (hull came with cable and lever)
My SN currently has the stock plastic waterbox, figured I should run a stock RN box.

Is there anything I’m missing? Thanks for any help!

If you’re using that 61x with an OEM 155 a 7/11 or 7/12 is going to be way too tall. I ran a 7/12 in an OEM 155 with an 898 PHP/PFP, for a 61x go as low pitch as you can find, like a 5/9 or 5/10…

Appreciate it, getting conflicting info though now haha. PO and another recommended the 7s to me.

I will 2nd that. A 7/12 will be wayyy too much pitch for a 61x. Honestly I wouldn't run a 155 behind a 61x at all. A 144 mag with a 9/15 or 10/16 will be the best setup for your 61x.
I agree that a 144 would be a better match for that 61x. However….. I’m going to bet that hull is setup with 155 shoe, so for less buy, sell, repeat a flat prop 155 makes sense. And that sweet hull is gonna need a bigger motor in the future.

It definitely is haha. I’m redoing that SN and it’s gonna take a while and I don’t wanna waste the motor or hull while I save up. I figured make it work, chase boats and get tray time then get a DASA or something next season.

Consider buying a lay down pipe now and running it with a spray bar on that 61x. You’re gonna need the pipe for whatever motor you do next anyway. And get a Zeel, also usable down the road. I’ve ridden a couple of 61x’s with lay down pipes ran wet and they are actually a blast. Instead of putting parts on the shelf for the future, put them on now and use them. Doing it now will put you ahead of the game for tank/ batt layout for when you’re ready to graduate.

Yeah I think that’s an issue I’m gonna face. The hull part out is actually on here from November on the previous owners post. I don’t think that protec is gonna fit with the custom rear mount tank. It’s jetted so perfect I really don’t want to mess with it and swap pipes if it doesn’t fit. A buddy 5 min up the road has a raider not sure if it’s 701 or 760, but he said $800 with the trailer and it runs fine I’d just get it and a lay down pipe and start there if I can’t use what I have

95 raider 701 62t, $800 with the trailer. My buddy wants the trailer and would split with me $400 each. Do you guys think this with a milled stock head and b pipe would be a better choice?

Thats a good deal. Personally i dont put used engines ib my standups, id for sure go through it. Send the engine to @Jr. And have him work his magic on it. Put some 46s on it, zeel, lay down pipe then you'll have something that will properly push your 155 pump. Definitely flippable off a boat wake and possibly flatwater flip with some practice if it's a carbon hull.

I learned to FW flip a 85lb hull with a 61x cylinder, single 44, no case porting. Just a lay down wet pipe. Thats all you need for a good time. Definitely start with a 5/10. Your jetting on your motor shouldn't change much with the lay down. So you'll have a ripper without much dialing in.

If only I could find one! Hard to track down been trying

I think I got EVERYTHING I need. Going to do a full breakdown with prices so far:

Hull - $5000

Shipping - $670

Used 155 OEM pump with SJ driveshaft - $353

Rebuilt OEM midshaft and housing (HSI) - $312

RRP 155 trim nozzle - $293

HSI recommended a 7/12 - $485

Total: $7113

Donor ski was my uncles spare I bought in 2017 for $2k, not counting that. I’m going to run my front mount tank and try my current setup as is. If it’s not enough I will get a laydown pipe and test and tune. Thanks for all the advice from everyone. I’ll post build pics when I’m home next weekend.

I'm not sure a superjet tank will fit in a phantom. You might want to verify that. there's 2 phantoms in my group but both have laydown pipes. I'd imagine the hull inserts in the hull are set up for a laydown arrangement already.. the cost of the pipe is about the same as a b pipe with much more power.. there was a power factor for sale on here recently too. You might be able to use the engine mounts and midshaft housing from the raider if you buy it which for 400 bucks if it runs is a deal. Use the engine, electronics, mounts, and midshaft housing out of it. I'd keep the square nose together personally.

I have an identical square same protec build with a 760. I had to work on this one and it’s already stripped. I saw an airblair post on here with a 650 in a phantom with the stock exhaust. IMG_3525.png
I’ll make something work. I’m only 26 don’t have unlimited funds at the moment as I’m trying to fund my ECW season on my sj4. If I make what I have work for now I got a lot of years to save up and get a good motor and pipe for this hull.

You can kinda get away with using an SJ length drive shaft on the oem 155 pump but really it's a little too short. The 155 pump puts the driveshaft back ~10mm compared to a 144. I've done this on two different hulls now. One I used a superjet length shaft (because I had one) and just lived with it being a little short. I cheated the midshaft back a little bit to get closer to correct on spline engagement. The other I had sasquatchcrap make me a custom shaft and his price was (at the time) so reasonable it was less than I could find a stock superjet shaft. I don't know if that is still the case, it was a few years ago, but I would be looking into it if I was doing it again because I was really happy with the price and the part from him.

I’m not sure what the stock length is but the pump I got it said 26” shaft. And yeah I have a press I would cheat the MS back if I run into that. Appreciate everyone’s help and advice I just have 50% of you saying one thing then 50% another. Good project and experiment and the thread will help someone down the road I’m sure.

Congrats on the Phantom build — sounds like a solid start for getting into freestyle! Your list looks mostly dialed.
A few things to double-check:
Pump shoe & pump seal – Make sure your 155 pump sits clean.
Driveline couplers – Might need RN-style or conversion depending on midshaft length.
Motor mounts – Confirm alignment with your Phantom; some need spacing tweaks.
Exhaust hose + clamps – Especially if you're switching to the RN waterbox.
Cooling setup – Inline filters, T-fittings, and restrictors if needed for that pipe.
You're on the right track.
post build pics when it’s ripping!
