Help after my first day of riding...

Okay,

I just spent my first day riding standups. I was at pensacola beach in FL. Some questions:

1. Why didnt I buy a couple of these things sooner? They were exponentially more fun than my zxi or RXP.

2. I sank my freestyle ski within an hour of starting to ride. being that I've never been in salt water before, it was an experience kicking to hold the ski up for 20 minutes waiting for a boat to come idle me back to shore. I think i've revived it sufficiently. I ran 2 batteries dead pumping water out of it with the plugs out, I replaced the plugs and battery and also sprayed fogging oil all in the intake and cylinders. I'm still trying to get back home to freshwater so I havent been able to flush the skis yet.

3. How the F#$% does a scupper valve work? When does it work?

4. Am I supposed to be scared to pin the throttle on my really modified ski? (because I am)

The water flushes out the back of your ski under forward momentum. The water opens the scupper valve.

It depends on what kind of mods are on the ski, Comp. ignition advance, single or duel.

List the mods for us.

from what I understand a ski wont totally sink. the nose will float just under the water.

a scupper is a spring loaded valve and the water can push out but cant push its way in. they are known to leak though. and they can go bad. ross stuck a racket ball in his when it went bad i think.

Flush those skis ASAP! Salt water will start corroding in a mater of hours.

Yes, you will be scared to ride WOT until you have some time on them. There is a learning curve with these.

And welcome to the Dark Side!

It is essential that you get the engine running immediately after any water ingestion, especially salt water. Hopefully you aren't too bad off since you used fogging oil, but you really need to get the engine running ASAP. The heat dries the water up and the oil from the fuel coats everything well. Good luck with your new toys. They're a blast. :cheer:

for sure run those as soon as possible after sinking and you will be fine!

and the valve you talked about is a oneway valve that is recessed inside the hull. A sucpper sits on the back of the hull and is a rubber flap that lets water out and not so much in...most of the time.
If you have a one way valve that is blown out a scupper over the exit on the rear of the hull is IMO the easies and best fix...
If you have a bad scupper, IE flap broken something just replace it.

and one sojourner is right it "should" float nose down. although I have found an sxi pro washed up on the beach where we ride...don't think his floated. but they will usually bob with the tail just above or below the water

I put a raquet ball in my oneway valve cause I am a ghetto-ass fool that is addicted to riding like a runway model is to coke, and had to get on the water the very next day. Don't do that.

Either way it is a good idea to have an electric pump in there cause both of them leak...

it was the orange ski. It didnt totally sink, It was floating nose down and some guy in a pontoon boat came and hooked it and got it back up on the beach.

I did get it running yesterday afterwards, it took 2 batteries of pumping with the plugs out. I replaced the plugs, battery, and fogged the ******** out of the inside of both skis and I used a pump attached to a drill to get any remaining water out of the hull of both skis.

The reason I was asking about the scupper is because this ski has one, and I'm not sure when I would have taken all the water in so I'm not sure if it should have opened or not. It was really hard to open by hand when I got it up on shore.

I'm going now to ride in freshwater to flush both of them out.

I was the only standup on the beach at pensacola beach.

This weekend before I go to my place on lake of the ozarks I'm going to install a bilge pump in the orange ski and a second bilge pump in the other one.

I forgot to mention I have a 1996 Yamaha Superjet that I need to sell. It has everything you need including footholds, handholds, wamiltons hood, nose piece, scupper valve, milled head, aluminum handlpole, single 44, rebuilt intermediate shaft housing, brand new prop, intake grate, rideplate, umi steering, and modified msd. It has a brand new top end and the crank is in great condition. It has a B pipe too.

Those are the mods on the ski.

It has one of those neat front exhausts too.

I edited the original post. I dont know why the scupper didnt open and let the water out or if it shouldnt have opened and I just got water after I fell.

scupper

you have to be riding straight and pretty fast to force the water out of the scupper...the orange ski has a sweet bilge switch modified in the start stop box...just needs the actual pump now...also check all of your hoses and make sure none came off...that would cause the ski to fill with water.

ok, here's a trick:

if you sink your ski on the beach DONT GO HOME

you need to get it running asap for at lleast 30-45 mins to blow out all the water in the cases (jumping and hard turns or general shredding works best..)

turn the ski on its side, HOLD THE STOP BUTTON (kills spark so as not to fry the CDI) and with plugs OUT crank her over to get as much water out as possible

change out your plugs to #7's (they burn hotter) and right the ski..(you may have to change the plugs a few times...fondly known as the plug dance)

while you are trying to start ski PUMP YOUR PRIMER over and over and over....

guaranteed this will cut your plug dance in half.....

and yes, I said GUARANTEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
